Does a spoilerless scooby spoil handling?
 

Looking at getting an sti blobeye this christmas and gonna take of the standard spoiler as its just a little too big for my liking, I prefer the wrx spoiler however am thinking of going totally spoilerless. Will this have a big effect on the cars handling?

Probably improve it:lol1: I'd be first to admit mine are only on the car because I like the 'just off a rally stage' look - I am sure half the time they act as anchors:wonder:

I think spoilerless looks great. Might go that route myself in the future. Spoilerless much better than little wrx spoiler. Notably on quarter mile runs people either remove spoilers or at least the top half.

I,m sure i recall seeing him without one and he reaches 150mph or near as..

Have you guys noticed how much the standard STI spoiler flaps around when driving? No downforce there, it's all about the look.
If you want evidence of how much it improves handling take a look at the RA-R. No spoiler there.......:thumb:

That boot lid isn't spoilerless.........it has the Spec D bootlid spoiler :D

PS can't imagine either of the spoilers (WRX or STi) having a marked aerodynamic function at normal speeds

The standard Spec D spoiler is the same spoiler as a WRX (maybe you are thinking of the spoiler fitted to the JDM A Line model?)

My Spec D has a Prodrive spoiler which makes no noticeable difference on the road as far as I can tell but I am assured by the driver I manage that you can feel the downforce it creates at speed on a circuit.

You are correct, I was getting confused as the Spec D (Discreet) was based on an STi but came without the STi spoiler.

What,s the Spec of the Spec D ??? does it have more luxury etc then?? i.e Leather.. :wonder:

It makes no real practical difference (unless youre driving a WRC car and regularly 'flying'). You only need to worry about the air that goes under your car.

I think the spoiler will have some benefit but only above speeds of 60-70 mph according to my understanding.

For a quarter of a mile run, reducing drag will be important, but for general driving/tracks, above a certain speed I think it will be of benefit, albeit marginal.

For road driving I cannot see any benefit other than asthetic.

I don't think the speeds you do you will really notice it to be honest!

i was told the spoiler only starts to work past 100 mph so no one does that speed do they :Whatever_

he's talking out of his rear end:lol1: there was a thread about this a while back and someone came up with all the technical data, which stated the only thing it does is add weight and create a shed load of drag. i took mine off and my car is definately faster without it:luxhello: 0 to 60 and on track. i think there was a very slight improvement in downforce after about 130mph with the spoiler but the vortex it generated was detrimental to high speed stability:confused:

The one in the picture isn't an "A-Line" spoiler. Do a search for MIKKEL on here...his car has an A-Line spoiler on.

The one in the pic is similar to a MINES lip spoiler. Do a search for "Impreza trunk" on ebay.com (not .co.uk) and you will see both carbon and FRP versions.

There are quite a few cars on NASIOC with them on.

Me.........just got a new boot lid and got an A-line lip on the way.....time to go spoilerless :)

My Spec D came with the upgraded Prodrive GB270 spoiler from new, although the Spec D comes with the WRX spoiler as standard. View my scoob for the a-line spoiler which is the JDM equivalent to the UK Spec D. Also called the STi Limited in Europe I believe, or something like that.

Having gone from a 280bhp car with a huge wing to a 360bhp with no wing I can assure you it makes no difference... except I am carrying considerably less weight on the boot.

I did see a Prodrive quote on a documentory saying they are just a marketing excercise first and formost (but they where talking classic)

are you replacing the enitre boot lid and where are you getting the a line from?

Easy job if you buy a new boot. You need to fill the holes from the spoiler if not. Either way you need a good bodyshop.

You can buy the a-line spoiler from a main dealer.

The point of a spoiler is to improve down-force which aids cornering by increasing grip. The drag will slow you down when accelerating in a straight line but it would improve stability during extended high speed, straight line runs.

For everyday driving you'll see no difference.

P.S. Although the RA-R had no spoiler, the actual WRC car did (it even used the little WRX spoiler until 1997 - see here).
