Strongest Subaru engine

What is the strongest Impreza engine that subaru make/produce?

I don't mean for tuning, but just as it was made.

M535I 22 October 2008 08:30 PM

the closed deck block has to be one of them ?

banny sti 22 October 2008 08:33 PM

The bugeye sti probably has the strongest engine, from the factory as it had proper forged pistons.

Pete 22 October 2008 09:18 PM

What about the Spec C?? only asking cus i have one..

scoobyboy 22 October 2008 09:26 PM

the diesel!

Shaun 22 October 2008 09:28 PM

Any Newage 2ltr afaik, as already suggested topped by the JDM Bugeye. But I believe the "forged" pistons in them are not to be confused with other types of forged pistons available aftermarket... again afaik.

SC008Y_MAD 23 October 2008 10:57 AM

I heard on another forum that the bugeyes engine was the strongest. why is this so. Why did they produce just one strong engine?

frayz 23 October 2008 11:01 AM

The V7 motor had genuine STI forged pistons in it.

The later STIs had Hypercuetic (SP?) cast pistons in there and were alegidly not has hardy.

banny sti 23 October 2008 11:03 AM

All the newage engine are strong as Shaun states, its just the bugeye had better pistons and are better than the hyperutectic pistons used in the 2003 and onwards cars.

These pistons run much tighter clearences which can lead to issues and also are not good for running high boost due to the silicone content within them.

TonyBurns 23 October 2008 12:24 PM

Not quite right banny ;)
Those hypereuetic pistons can run high boost quite easily, the problem they suffer from is det, they are not as robust, but they are very strong otherwise, and they dont expand as much as the "forged" pistons which makes them better in many cases.
Also the rest of the engine on the JDM cars is an improvement over the bug/blob forged unit, due to upgraded parts (grooved crank for instance for better oil flow), but dont expect either type of engine to be reliable past 450bhp :)

Tony:)

On an alternative note, an engine is only as good as its servicing, strongest lump in the world wont last forever if it isnt cared for

I would check this, Paul from Zen has stated on a previous thread that the Ver8 motor uses STI forged pistons.

I will state my 2cents worth: the 2.0cdb found in early legacys

SC008Y_MAD 23 October 2008 06:00 PM

Thanks guys so far. No idea what you are talking about, but it kinda makes sense :wonder:

So what makes a 'blue printed' engine better for any other like on the 22B?

Peanuts 23 October 2008 07:19 PM

properly matched parts rather than slack factory tolerences.

wiley 23 October 2008 09:07 PM

has the wrx bugeye have forged pistons??

Nope, just cheap n cheerful cast ones (and not hypereuetic either).

Tony:)

Hope you guys don't mind me resurrecting an old thread, so based on more recent knowledge and more probable facts - what exactly is the difference between the V7 / 2002 STi Type UK bugeye engine vs the JDM? also is the bug engine still seen as the strongest?

Does anyone have any actual facts? It *seems* that the engines themselves are identical.

On a side note, I am convinced (though it might just be my bias) that the STi sounds different to a WRX but then again it may just be me convincing myself when it really doesn't in reality, what do you think?

Alan Jeffery 05 February 2014 10:14 AM

Wiley's engine's pretty strong..

Do you mean the twin scroll? If so it will sound different due to the different exhaust manifold design for the turbo.

Steve001 05 February 2014 11:12 AM

The 2.5 is EPIC :)

dazsti72 05 February 2014 11:40 AM

justy.

He's got a UK bug STI, the twin scroll didn't start until the jdm blobs.

Colinm101 05 February 2014 03:13 PM

2 litre JDM Bug Engine.

Although I may be bias :)

From my limited knowledge the jdm 2.0 sti engines have bigger valves, more aggressive cams and a 8000 rpm red line. Gear box has different 5th and 6th ratios.

Stiwilliam 05 February 2014 03:54 PM

2006 sti engin and box

New to this but any one on hear intrested in a 2006sti infinite and box 30 thousand mile full history it was taken out my sti that was written on rear end damage was going to scrap the car but mate told me this form would find a buyer offers

stonejedi 05 February 2014 03:55 PM

:DWilly wonka 2.5.SJ.

Kwik 05 February 2014 03:57 PM

Didn't the v3 and v4 also have forged pistons as standard?
