Insurance @ 20?

Hello I'm new to the site but always been interested in Scoobs

I currently drive an SW20 (MK2 MR2) which is a nice car and I do really like, especially having the roof off, but I need 5 seats realistically, and i want more power so was looking at scoobs for around the 5-6k mark.

In Feb all being well I will have 1 years NCB with a clean license and be 20, is there any chance I will be able to get insured on one for a reasonable price? I've been getting a few quotes and they're well over the 3k mark tpft! :eek2:

Any chance of insuring something like this?

Subaru : Mines V6 Sti Impreza

You will struggle getting low priced insurance on any subaru at 20 really, and then most companies wont insure drivers under 25 on STi's as they are a higher performance/higher risk car.
You can try keith michaels, though I think 2-3k is what your going to be looking at really :(

Tony:)

at 21 mine was 2200 , that was 4 years ago , so god knows what it will be now , try green light mate

El Cat 28 September 2008 05:30 PM

age 20 and 1 year no claims
might as well pull ur pants down and bend over now!!

my bro was 22 and had 3 years no claims and he paid £1200 quid which is reasonable

M444GY 28 September 2008 05:59 PM

as above mate . you wont pay less than 3g id emagine .

keep trying though

Rookstar 28 September 2008 06:07 PM

insurance is crazy prices on scoobys for young drivers, just to give you an idea im 23 and have a clean license and 4 years no claims and the cheapest insurance quote i could get on my 2004 wrx is £1900 with admiral. daylight robbery really but if you want a nice car you have to pay it. ive heard if you go for a wagon it works out a bit cheeper but your probly still gona be talking silly money

GlesgaKiss 28 September 2008 06:11 PM

You are in a good situation to buy a mint classic UK turbo 2000 now. 98-00 on your budget.

Once you see one you like, try giving A plan a call.

It would help having more NCB though. I had 3 years NCB when I insured my scoob at 20(last year), and I paid roughly £1700 TPFT...

Alan

Edited to say - Just noticed that you were looking at a V6 Sti. All I do is be honest and say no chance. You could be talking almost £3000 third party! Not really worth it. Start off with a UK turbo(208 - 214bhp), to get a year's experience: which insurers like on a car like this. Then you will 21, and have another year's no claims, so will be in a better situation to start looking at Sti's.

Really nice tidy car that Sti though...I noticed it on pistonheads yesterday

Classic_Marc 28 September 2008 06:11 PM

I'm 23 with 5 years no claims, I paid £900 fully comp for my99 uk classic turbo, sti's are more again!

Good luck though, if you can get a good price that you can afford. DO IT!

M444GY 28 September 2008 06:37 PM

im 25 3 yncb fully comp 700 quid which is fooking good for london

El Cat 28 September 2008 06:38 PM

im sure i just saw someone on this thread say they had a sccoby insured TPFT??

rich08 28 September 2008 06:43 PM

That is REALLY good for 25 with so little NCB in London. I pay just over 500 with all mods declared, and I'm 30 with over 10 years NCB!

crazy!

That'll be me.

Why is that crazy exactly? It is probs worth a maximum of £4000 to an insurance company(maybe less), so why would I want to claim if I put it through a hedge and wrote it off? Would ruin my insurance for life.

El Cat 28 September 2008 07:39 PM

so you either pay £3800 up front in insurance or at least £4500 if you pay it over a year and do it monthly as they add interest on to you!
thats £450 a month over 10 months.
crazy!!
but if you work hard enough then why not! good on you!

osborne 28 September 2008 08:00 PM

I'm 20 now, 2k with 1 year no claims. try companies like 4youngdrivers.
ive had my scoob since i was 18 an its a 94 import runnin about 340 with declaired mods. So not as bad as people say if you shop around alot

Not sure I understand what you're saying there.

I paid £1700 up front to insure the car for a year TPFT(not sure where you are getting the other figures from, that you are calling crazy).

scooby_will 28 September 2008 09:36 PM

when i got my impreza insured i was 20 and i put my old man on my insurance and it was still 1700 a yr, and thats on a uk 2000 turbo, just got my renewal through and they dropped it down to 700 just because im now 21, will be 22 at the end of the year, funny how a newer blobeye sti on fully comp insurance is only 50 pounds more lol

well i paid it off in one go, i had the money so thought why not, many of you will criticise me for the insurance but it is my 'normal person' dream car and has been since i was little so it made sense to buy what i wanted.
i sold my bmw so had the money from that to buy the car and insurance!
as ive already found out, its well worth it. (most of the time)

Mattyboy-Wrx 29 September 2008 07:13 PM

Jesus! A Z4 AND an STI at 23? You must either have a very good job or a big credit card bill ;)

MikeCardiff 06 October 2008 08:34 AM

For younger drivers I would say dont even bother until you have at least 3 years NCB - it does make a big difference towards lowering the cost. Anyone with no or 1 year is going to be looking at paying £3000 on a car that isnt worth much more than that.

Don`t know about that i have my v2 sti 555 type ra with 0 no claims as my no claims is on z4 and the ra comes in at bout £850

austinwrx 06 October 2008 02:13 PM

just can't see the point of chucking good money to drive a 10 yr old car about.

given the high running costs too..... if you have £3000/4K a yr spare

buy a house, go on nice holidays- but honestly to sit in a 10 yr old car worth £3K-£4k anyway ???? its just not going to be anything remotely special anyway.

each to their own-but just coming at it from an older point of view- been there done that kind of thing.
