HOW TO SPLIT ENGINE FROM GEARBOX??
As above. Trying to get engine out for rebuild but cant seem to seperate from gearbox. I know the dowels can give great problems. Can anyone help me out?? Any advice on this would be great as i am stumped:confused:
Thanks in advance, Duncan |
have you removed the pin from the clutch fork ? if not it will not come apart.rob

Have you removed the clutch fork rod under the large allen head bolt by the starter?
|
Damn you!!! two replies in the same minute!
|
No i havnt, this is the first time i have done this. Once removed then what?? Duncan
|
Take the allen key cover off,it's quite large.Once off, wind a bolt into the rod inside and pull the rod out. This will release the fork, and the box should come off, simple!!
|
Thanks matey, gonna give that another go right now:) will keep you posted. Thanks for now, Duncan

removed pin no problem but is still solid. What can i do next?? It just wont budge

:wonder: Two bottom engine mounts, top brace,4 engine to gearbox bolts, clutch fork rod, electrics and hoses etc that should be it. Is it moving about just not breaking from the box?
|
Sometimes you have no choice but to put a screwdriver in between the two to wedge them apart.
Make sure you've raised the gearbox slightly using a trolly jack and also make sure the bottom engine mounts are clear of the front crossmember. What you don't want is either the engine or gearbox being stuck on the two bottom studs because they are not at the same height as each other. Get this lot right and you should be able to knock a screwdriver down between the too and free them from the dowls. |
yeah its moving about but its like the box is welded to the engine. I can lift the engine but the box just wants to come with it. All the parts you mentioned are removed :brickwall

as daz said, you need to take the weight of the box off the engine, it sounds like the dowels are very tight! Is it coming apart a few mm?
|
no movement atall its solid. Tried the jack under the box and the screwdriver between them. snapped one of my new teng screwdrivers too which just adds to the nightmare. Maybe the stihl saw is the answer :lol1:

Have you tryed putting a weight on the clutch disconecting it from the gear box? wilst useing a pri bar to seperate them
|
make sure all of the bolts joining gearbox and engine are removed, its easy to miss one,u have removed starter motor havent you??
|
Well guys thats it finally out. Those dowels were right buggers, they held on till the very end. Big bar 2 broken screwdrivers and alot of swearing but i got there in the end. Thankyou all for your tips and help once again here on scoobynet. Now to get the rebuild done and get it back in which i am sure will be another task. Thanks again, Duncan

Remember to put some copper grease on the dowels when putting it back together :D
