Cleaning the engine
ok, this may have been covered but did a quick scan through the posts and couldn't see.
How / what is the best way to clean the engine bay / engine, for the typical guy at home. i've heard of steam cleaning, low pressure washing, wrapping certain bits in plastic bags / cling film / alu foil. my mum's husband even goes over his jags engine with some kind of turpentine and a reasonably small paint brush. but for the 'amateur' at home who has access to a small Kärcher, buscket sponge, soap, brush. what is the best way. What bits need covering. if anyone has the inclination to post a picture of an engine bay with said parts covered. would be most appreciative. thanks - an owner with a clean polished body, but a filthy looking bay. |
There is a good guide here ;) Car Care Advice - How to safely clean and protect your engine bay
Also go easy on the inter cooler or put some card in it to protect the fins. |
Here.
I did what advised convered alarm, alternator and took it easy near the intercooler and other electrical lumps... Used Auto-glym clean machine,3 different brushes and then some super-sheen(not shown in the pics... Some pics without the shiney and 1 treatment done...(ignore the strut brace I added it wasn't hidden under grime):Whatever_ http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y22...yengine001.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y22...yengine007.jpg |
cheers for those. the link was in depth and seemed to tell that no worries for water + engine.
numpty question but where is the alternator, and do i need to cover the battery, terminal points are covered by rubber protectors, at least on the + terminal cheers |
I have forgotten how many times I have posted this link.....
Polished Swiss That should sort you out. Battery terminals are fine if they have a rubber cover |
well i've added it as a favourite, so if someone else asks the same query, i can post it on your behalf. ;-)
thanks a lot Steve |
