HELP!!! My car wont start!

Ok

I went out to my car yesterday morning and it wouldn't start, i jumped started it and it was fine so i went over to my mate, then when i went to start it again it wouldn't start, another jump and i was off again.

When i got home i put the battery charger on the car and left it for 3 hours. i was off to the gym later and the car started 1st time no problem. when i came out of the gym the bloody thing wouldn't start again.

Now i thought this meant the battery was knackered. So this morning i bought a new battery for it, spent the last 15 mins fitting it and when i went to start the car......nothing All you can here is a click from the starter motor.

Is the starter motor my problem or is there something else i should check?

Prior to yesterday the car started first time every time with no hesitation

Thanx

Paul

If you use Jump leads does it start? if so it sounds like a new battery didn't solve it so it may be an electrical fault draining the battery (my Tracker has killed 3 batteries now  ) or a charging problem not putting the juice back in.

Have you done any electrical mods to the car?

Do you run with the lights on. Not sure how much truth in the split charging system needing load to charge is but I always run with at last side lights on just in case.

Good Luck.

sounds like starter is sticking or if there is an imobiliser it could be that playing up

Scooby23 18 March 2008 06:10 PM

Well the new battery didn't make any difference, so i think that rules out a dodgy alternater, i got a mate coming over 2moro to check the starter.

it does have an imobiliser, i'll get that checked if my mate says the starter is fine.

p1prodrive 18 March 2008 06:15 PM

use a multimeter to test

1. the alternator and see what voltage it produces at the battery
2. the voltage the starter motor is getting

I know your not dodgy mate, it's just one of those things, gonna have a look at the earths 2moro and see what happens then.

Scooby23 19 March 2008 03:39 PM

Ok, i cleaned the terminals but didn't do any good, so i tried something a mate told me to do, he said to put the car in gear and when you try to turn it over give the car a little push, i did this and instead of just a click from the starter motor it give out a sort of grinding noise, then after that it doesn't even click, is it fair to say that it is ****ed and that is probably my problem?

big daz2 19 March 2008 05:04 PM

does it start with jump leads.it only sounds like an ignition problem to be honest.

drive 19 March 2008 06:08 PM

starter could be knackered m8

ok disconect the battery
remove the starter get some jump leads earth the starter from the battery to the body of the starter then from the live terminal of the battery touch it to the live on the starter but put it on the floor and hold it with your foot as this gives quite a nasty jolt if its working fine

i learnt the hard way many years ago

ceri

good luck

the car runs fine if bump started.

Scooby23 20 March 2008 11:39 AM

Ok guys

Problem is solved

Took the starter motor off this morning and put the jump leads on it and found that the motor is knackered, wouldn't spin at first, then it did, then it didn't. So it has an intermittent fault

Nowi have to find a new starter motor at a reasonable price, phoned my local motor factors and they wanted £180!!!

Thanx for all the advice guys, i'll hopefully be back on the road soon :thumb:
