WR1 Remapped
 

Took the WR1 to Port Seton yesterday and to the legend that is Andy Forrest to tie in my decat exhaust system and induction kit.

Things started off a bit odd near to home. I braked at a junction and the car decided it wouldnt bother with the stopping and just continue on. I got a nice crunching sound through the brake pedal so I figured my brakes were well and truly knackered. Ultimately, it turned out to be black ice, but it was a scary few moments! Then, in the nearby petrol station, still reeling from the brake incident, I stalled the car trying to turn to face the pumps. This let off an almighty pop from the exhaust, almost giving an elderly bloke a heart attack as he jumped to see what he thought must have been a World War 2 cannon going off. Anyway, was a nice trip up to Scotland from sunny Cumbria. The closer we got to Port Seton, the foggier it got. If you stole a bucket of fog would it be mist? Hmm...

Dropped car off with Andy at 1pm, explained the mods to him and what I'd like from the car. Told him about the brakes being shoddy and the splitter was slightly cracked. Tip top.

The girlfriend and I then went to Gyle shopping centre, to put the time in. The 'time' being 1 and half hours on a bus. That sorted that problem out.

Got back to Andy's gaff and he said the car was spot on. He was a little unhappy that he couldnt bring the boost in earlier through the rev range, but this was due to the K&N short ram induction kit I was running. He tried a few times, but the K&N was a sort of anti-surge mechanism! What this did was improved the mid-range considerably, though.
He recommended either an APS wing induction or the standard airbox, which may not see an increase in power, but would allow the torque to come in a lot sooner. Its better than standard, now, as it is, anyway. But just incase I fancy going back to him.

Got a graph with power and torque, it was around 345bhp and 325lbs torque. This was on Supreme 97RON fuel, too, and Andy said regardless of the induction kit, it was pulling very impressive figures http://p1woc.co.uk/postnuke/modules/.../icon_cool.gif http://p1woc.co.uk/postnuke/modules/.../icon_cool.gif

Had a quick look around his world record holding Type R Scooby, looking well with its flared arches and drag style tyres. It was up on the lift, so was obviously getting some more work done.

Car was great on the way home. Sounds amazing on acceleration and who needs a dump valve with the noises of the induction kit?! It pulled like a train in 5th and 6th gear and feels so much more responsive in low gears accelerating http://p1woc.co.uk/postnuke/modules/...on_biggrin.gif

It wasnt all good, though. I lost the drivers side of my front splitter on the motorway. It lasted longer than I thought it would, to be honest, after cracking the mofo on the second day I got the car! Thankfully the tougher one should arrive today or tomorrow, along with my Brembo discs. Will be fitted Saturday.

Yeah I came from a modded P1 to the WR1, and have been chuffed with it since purchase a couple of weeks ago!
It seems to get a bit of a mixed reaction on here, but then so did the P1. Horses for courses I guess :)

I noticed in your other thread you wanted to de-tango but were afraid....seriously - go for it. Unbelievable how much difference it makes getting rid of the orange triangles. I was afraid while doing it, hair dryer method was useless so went for oven - they only just fit too! Just do 50C and check em every 2mins (after an initial 5mins).

This is something I seriously want to do! I read all the threads saying its a simple procedure and I'm sure it is. I just done want to fubar it up. The oven method surely cant be conventional (no pun intended)?!
Saying that, I do have a heater which is pretty powerful. Its getting everything back together without causing any gaps etc which would let in condensation and water I guess.

Cant believe no one actually sells or stocks them as standard. Would probably be expensive as hell, anyway.

Is there a proper guide on here to do the job?

Glad you had a good time. Surprised you didn't want to take part in the mapping session?!?

I can recommend the APS kit, it does the trick for my car. I opted for the 75mm (larger) one. Got it from DSA for about £190.

So you didn't map it on VPower either? With the better induction kit and better fuel you'd have seen a bit more there.

There is a guide for the detango. With a little searching you'll find it, i don't have it bookmarked at home.

The actual removing the triangle is the easy part. A fan heater will do it. I did it with a hair dryer, so it took a bit longer. I'd recommend some clear silicone on the seal afterwards, just to be sure.

The hardest part for me was removing the lights, but me & BadBaz did it together. (OK, i watched Baz remove them, then I helped out, after my ice cream :D )

I'm not saying it was piece of the preverbial, as it did take time and I was trying to be very careful. Set aside half a day to be safe and do one at a time. Getting the lights out without nicking the paint on the wingtips was hardest so mask up well!

Buy some philips silvervision indicator bulbs and hopefully you'll get some sidelights thrown in - you can only change sidelights by taking the unit out of the car :cuckoo: so a good time to do it - I didn't realise at the time so I now have yellow(ey) sidelights with 50% brighter white bulbs in main beam.

As I say, I used the oven and it worked a treat - took about 12mins in total to get the mastic to release. Afterwards once I'd put them back together I showved em back in for a few mins to get it warm again so the mastic would take. Don't use white mastic afterwards to seal it - use black if anything as I made that mistake on one, the other I didn't bother at all and one year on - still looking good!

View My Scooby for some shots de-tangoed. It really does make an impact on the fronts looks.

The headlights on my 04 Spec-C come from the factory already de-tangoed, but i've been told they're costly. Hope this helps.

Nice write up Scutch - thanks for taking the time. Strangely enough, last time I went up to see Andy for mapping, I left Cumbria in bright sunshine and hit (Scotch?) mist as I approached Andy's :Suspiciou

You'll definitely benefit from a wing-mounted induction kit and a sip of V-Power (plus of course a tweak to the map from Andy)

Unfortunately, Cumbria is very lacking in the V-Power department. Carlise is around 40 miles away from where I live, and travelling that distance just to fill up would be a tad pointless.

Hopefully we'll have a few more in the next couple of years, but wouldnt bet on it :(

good results.i had mine mapped by andy last july.what a difference it makes too.i got 340bhp and 322lb on the prodrive downpipe,k&n apollo caik and v-power fuel.
i didn't fully notice the difference at first as i drove the car while he mapped it.good fun too:D but after getting back home and having a few hours away from the car,it was like a different car when i got back in it.the boost peaks much faster now,comes on boost earlier too.
i'll be seeing andy again next month when i have the md321h strapped on along with the supporting mods:norty:

we recently had andy over to ireland with great results from my 2007 wrx with 280bhp and 331 ft lb of torque im really pleased and andy is such a gent. :thumb:

Aye, 40 miles to fill up doesn't make sense. Some people think i'm mad going 8 miles.

There's always top-up juice available though. ;)

Andy, 'if' is the operative world in the toilet of England (Cumbria) :(. There's only one tesco filling station near us and they don't sell tesco 'finest' petrol.
There's two options as I see it -
1 - There's an opportunity for someone to get a shell petrol station up and running in West Cumbria
2 - If someone can get a car running on plutonium we've got piles of the stuff

lol, indeed. The 'Optimax' and later V-Power station in Cockermouth was knocked down last year, too. Ridiculous.
There's a Shell in Carlisle, as you'll no doubt know. But that is way too far for me to travel. So many Tesco stores, and not one of them with 99RON. Pah.
