noise from cold start??

hope someone can help a little with the following???

have got a '98 type r which has had a bottom end rebuild only 7k ago but noticed this morning that the engine was knocking/tapping a little until oil came up to temp after that nothing at all and drives superb.

any ideas what this could be???

pistons slap most likely.. nothing to overly worry about..

piston slap??

so is that causing any damage to the engine???

Jolly Green Monster 22 December 2007 11:22 PM

pistons is rattling in the bore due to clearances fairly large when engine is cold..

as long as it is a continuous tick / knock matching the rpm and goes when engine warm then it sounds like piston slap.. do a search on here on "piston slap" you should find sound clips.. if it is not matching rpm then it would be something to worry about.

Wouldn't a fairly recent bottom end rebuild taken care of the piston slap issue though? New pistons matched to bore size a bit better than the originals that had a tendancy to do it when cold.

depends whether the pistons were changed, if so which make etc.. the drop in pistons will do it.. most rebuilds won't necessarily replace pistons, depends if there is bore damage..

Sounds daft but is it defo from the engine?
I know a few who get a ticking from the gearbox when its cold, once its warmed up it can go away.

Hydraulic tappets can also make a tapping noise untill they fill with oil. :)

StickyMicky 23 December 2007 10:17 AM

mine has slapped from cold for 5 years and has even been rebuilt ;)

nothing to worry about :)

wardy32 23 December 2007 04:28 PM

seems like i need to check a bit further into the noise then to make sure but cheers all for the advise..

fingers crossed it doesnt cost too much!!!...yeh i know silly answer its a scooby its gonna cost loads..anyway ho ho ho merry xmas all!!!!

Scoobyslammed 24 December 2007 12:53 PM

Tappets arn't hydraulic on a ver4...
Forged bottom ends will normally make alittle noise until warmed up... nothing to worry about...
Aslong as it quiter when warm wouldn't worry too much...

Pittys sti 24 December 2007 01:10 PM

Anyone tried putting Wynns supercharge in with their oil? Ive been told it might make my bugeye sti quieter.

scooby2boo 24 December 2007 05:20 PM

ive just bought my first scooby and it my first turbo riceburner - im usually a bigblock man, i also have noticed 'ticking' sounds a bit like noisey injectors, dosnt really go away though????? what do you think? from what you all say its pretty normal? cheers for any help

rigga 24 December 2007 10:25 PM

Ticking noise like noisy injectors?........ poss noisy injectors as they all do that, piston slap is another noise altogether.

Jolly Green Monster 24 December 2007 10:58 PM
