Mini Cooper S

Bit play with one last night, straight run on a quiet dual carrigeway, I honestly thought the straight line speed on one of these would be more impressive than it actually was as I easily trounced him :norty:

As an observation I would say they're nowhere near as quick as a Clio 172/182 as they really can give a Scoob a run for it's money. :lol1:

Panthro 02 October 2007 09:24 AM

To be fair a 182 is 20bhp up on the mini.

So why do car magazine reviews constantly compare the 2 then ?

because they are both superminis/hot hatches and in the same class. just because theres a power difference, doesnt mean they have to be classed differently.

vtec_addict1 02 October 2007 12:28 PM

I dont get it? What power are you running?

My Focus is running 270bhp and blows away Clios and Minis (inc the works one) for fun.

The cooper s has 161bhp and reaches 60 in about 7.5.......No contest
& 197 is obviously 197 bhp and reaches 60 in about 6.8 is quite abit quciker thatn the mini but still should be no contest.

Do the current hot Focuses (RS ?) run 270bhp as std ? Had thought they were originally about 220 bhp.

vtec_addict1 02 October 2007 12:39 PM

Yeah spot on mate they were 212 standard i believe. Right again its an RS which they stopped making on a 04 plate.
Alot of fun but as its fwd its abit of a maniac lol (Hence why im thinking of getting a Scoob)

Varboy 02 October 2007 01:01 PM

^^^ Wise move...

Dream Weaver 02 October 2007 01:25 PM

Sister has a Cooper S, they are much slower than I thought they would be also.

mgcvk 02 October 2007 03:17 PM

Isn't there exhaust and remap routes for the Cooper S. I've seen a few with aftermarket exhausts. New ones are turbos as opposed to supercharged I think?

Weighs less too.

Snazy 02 October 2007 03:31 PM

What year was the Mini CS ?
The R56 (current shape) Cooper S went over to a turbo powered lump, which from driving experience is TOTALLY different to the old supercharged version.

Fantastic little car, and for interior spec etc I would choose the Mini.
Love driving them. Missus works for Mini :D

THe JCW is said to be a bit of a beast :D

Yep the new ones a turbo with an extra 10 or so bhp, and to be fair it is nicer to drive.
Although i hate French cars (and wouldnt buy either) i would have the Clio if i had to choose.

It was on an 07 Plate, not sure if that's the new model or not :wonder:

Snazy 02 October 2007 04:29 PM

Yeah sure will be the new one.
Amazing little car round the roads around Snowdonia, the day after she got her mittens on it.
2 days and 750 miles later, I was impressed.

Was a little worried when the gear level sleeve came off in my hands while accelerating hard

vtec_addict1 02 October 2007 05:06 PM

Not bad for a heavy piece of German poo lol

mozzaITA 02 October 2007 05:25 PM

I get to go in a cooper S reguarly, pretty nippy i guess i used to have a williams clio and there wasnt anything in it between them, no doubt now my scoob will show them a clean peair of heals..... and the rest.

Thank god i dont have anything like that anymore dissapiontin little things!!

Snazy 02 October 2007 05:52 PM

The power band in the turbo cooper S is so much wider, its instantanious not annoyingly sudden like the SC version :)

WRX_Dazza 02 October 2007 05:55 PM

always have a mini of some sort trying it on with me on the motorway :(

quick squirt of the loud pedal soon dispenses of the snooty tw4ts!!!

mozzaITA 02 October 2007 05:58 PM

fashion accessories methinks

Snazy 02 October 2007 06:10 PM

lol very different car to a scooby but I reckon, bloody good at what it does :)

Mikkel 02 October 2007 07:07 PM

They can be fun little cars but they shouldn't race scoobs. I had a play with one once and it was a bit of a mismatch.

Saying that, you can have fun in a JCW GP and they are great looking little cars. I had a go in one once and was impressed for what it is.

The Trooper 1815 02 October 2007 07:32 PM

Is the new engine a French lump? Seem to read it somewhere, TG or What Car I think??

mozzaITA 02 October 2007 07:34 PM

The new mini cooper s shares the same engine as the pug 207 gti i believe

Snazy 02 October 2007 08:56 PM

Yup a "joint venture" twin scoll turbo etc :)
Apparently good for quite a large hike in power too.

The JCW GP is indeed one heck of a tool. Evil looking thing too :)
As for them racing scoobies, fair comment, but on the move they aint far off the pace of a factory car.

rooferman 02 October 2007 10:01 PM

I quite enjoy jumping in the missus cooper s now and again....quite fun and very easy drive after getting out of the sti ra!!!

Mikkel 02 October 2007 10:06 PM

That's the key, easy to drive.

I took a cooper s around croft as a warm up/training car and could concentrate on learning the circuit as driving was a no brainer.

Red Rocket 11166 02 October 2007 11:51 PM

Anyboby know what the difference is between the standard Cooper S and the Cooper S Works ?

The latest Cooper S is 175BHP in standard form 0 to 60 7.1 secs (140 mph)

Coopers S works is 210BHP 0 to 60 in 6.4 secs (143 mph)

My Missus loves them, wants to get rid of the Scoob and get one! :hjtwofing

Bubba po 03 October 2007 08:24 AM

Do Scoob drivers really drive around waiting for other cars to "have a go"? The roads are getting more like the wild west every day.:cuckoo:
