Help with fitting Performance Creations mud flaps

Hi all,

Just bought a set (with the stainless steel brackets) and started to fit them. ONE of the screws used to fit is a self-tapper. But on both the front and rear they need to go into the chasis which is of course metal?????
This just don't seem right? Do I need to drill pilot holes first or am I making a huge blunder, being a bit fick and got everything wrong???? :freak3:

Its a 2006 new shape (hawkeye) STI.

Please help

Thx

Ronnie

Did it come with instructions?

I drilled small pilot holes with mine and used the self tappers to cut it's own thread. Been on 2 years almost and no problems at all

Thx Bodski - do you alos habe the hawkeye version.

Am I right then - on then back the self-tapper goes through the thin piece of metal (I'll be able to see the screw coming out the other side). ON the front you actually go into the chasis which means just behind the wheel?

The instructions make no reference to drilling holes! I just wana make sure that I dont start drillin into somethin I shouldn't!!!!!

Thx again

Ronnie

As above. I've actually just fitted my second set on Tuesday, to my new Scooby. The first one had the flaps on for two years and they still looked great. £50 very well spent IMO.

You need to drill pilot holes for the self-tappers; I used a 4mm metal drillbit. The backs are easy as it's just a thin bit of metal, the fronts are harder work. Use the 'hammer' setting on your drill as this will make lighter work of it.

No M8 mines a 2003 Blobeye. But as you say yes the rears you go straight through the protruding parts of the bodywork and the fronts do go straight in the chassis behind the wheel.

I found the fronts way easier to do with the wheels off, but i know of people who've put the front wheel on full lock and worked round it. I drilled 2mm pilot holes front and rear and allowed the screws to cut the thread for me.

Just make sure the flaps are sitting level before you go drilling the holes :thumb:

Thx lordretsudo,

Did you put yours on the lowest (so they hang down more) setting?

I guess my post about drilling into the chasis for the fornt and thin piece of metal on the back is right then? Can I do any damage to anything when drilling in to the chasis. Don't want to put the "nail through the water pipe"!!!

Cheers

Ronnie

Thx again.

Just one last (probably quite stupid question) if thats OK? Can't you just tell the newbies on here (i.e. me)........

The stainless steel bracket does that go between the flap and the car or on top of the flap???? I.m guessing it goes inbetween so you cant see it when they're fitted??????

Boy do I sound stupid :iamwithst

I left mine on top of the flap so the bracket is visable when the flap is fitted. ie it sadwiches the flap to the car with the bracket

Thx again Bodski :notworthy

That's what I'll do then, I guess it makes them that bit more secure being "sandwiched".

Your help is greatly appreciated.

Have a great weekend.

Ronnie

Its not advised to put a HSS( steel drill bit) on Hammer its will be blunt in no time,The key with steel drilling is going as slow as possible.

Defo keep them at there lowest, looks a lot better.

lordretsudo 07 June 2007 11:21 PM

I'm not too worried about blunting the drill bit TBH (I have lots!), just want it done quick! I tried doing it slowly on my previous car and it took forever...

I also put mine on the lowest setting (never had a problem with them on this setting on my previous car), and the metal bracket should definitely be in front of the flap, not sandwiched between the flap and the car.
