Must have been asked many times before but..........

I have a std MY00, 218BHP??? How many more horses does the PPP give me?? & at what cost?? & how much more insurance can I expect to pay??

TonyBurns 17 December 2001 01:54 PM

My MY00 with PPP pushes out just under 250bhp (249) running with optimax, as for the insurance, well 10% seems to be the in figure on your policy, but make sure you tell them its an approved option, some companies wont cover you if you have a PPP fitted :(

Officially 215 to 237bhp or 218 to 240PS = 10%. Midrange is over 20% more where you need it. Get a quote for up to 20% so that you can add a DP and boost controller, or better still just start with those and forget PPP and change the backbox.

John,

What is a DP & boost controller?? How much & where from??

What about warranty???

Would you say that there are better ways to get more BHP than PPP??

Wavers 17 December 2001 04:54 PM

We have PPP and Quickshift at no extra cost to insurance. No probs.

I've got the PPP kit+downpipe on my MY99 RB5 and it rocks...

Regarding a boost controller, what would you recommend guys/girls?

I know that UP Auto (http://www.upauto.co.uk/) do the lovely Apexi kit but would it be worth getting the Super AVC-R and Super AFC to use in conjunction with the PPP or would that need changing?

Matt

DP = downpipe - replaces the first bit of the exhaust - liberates almost as much power as PPP, or improves PPP :) Slight increase in noise if you select a suitably quiet backbox to go with it. You would still have a cat in your centre section and would hopefully scrape through MOT. Your warranty would be void unless you have a very sympathetic dealer! 120-300+VAT + fitting. Scoobysport, Magnex, Falkland, Scoobymania.

Boost controller - electronic £400 - eg HKS EVC IV, Apexi AVC-R
- manual - www.dawesdevices.com £25 your warranty will be void with any of these. Would give you at least as much power as PPP, but a little less subtle.

PPP is expensive, but very driveable/resellable/legal noise/emissions, lots of torque midrange, not much outright power increase. On its own though arguably makes your car as quick as an STi - certainly much more torquey.

John,

Interesting comments...especially re: the downpipe, dealer and warranty. My dealer (a Subaru dealer!) fitted the decat downpipe and supplied the car with it and warranty! Could be interesting if something went wrong ;)

Is it worth getting the controllers to use in conjunction with the PPP or is that overkill?

Matt

Boost control makes a MASSIVE difference - for example I now get full boost of 17PSI at 2400rpm. That translates into 50-70 in 5th gear in only 5 seconds, compared with 8+ unmodded, 7 with PPP and 6 + with PPP+DP. Other increments are similarly improved - 30-70 off the speedo is 4 seconds - prob about 4.5 in reality?
