:cry: Might have to get rid of the scoob:cry: costing a fair bit to run and have baby no.2 on its way:thumb:

So for a year or two gonna have to get summat cheaper to run:freak3: I will be back though!:thumb:

I have tested a couple of motors with fairly different results:

1 - Golf Vr6 Highline - okish, pulled well once wound up but just didnt feel special if you know what I mean:confused: Bodywork was a bit tired as well:freak3:

2 - 306 Gti6 - Wow just pulls and pulls, instant throttle response, handled well (well as far as I could tell on a test drive) bit tinny and not built that good BUT it felt right:thumb: Its not a scoob but it was v.good - fancy trying a rallye as well now:thumb:

So what are everybodies opinion on the above or what other cars would people suggest?:confused:

Depends what you are after. If you can get past the image and it's not too small you can't get better then a saxo vts for the price you want to pay. They are a hoot to drive and fast. Throw 1500 at them and you are easily on a par with civic type r's, 182's and the like.

There won't be much difference between a vts and a gti-6 performance wise.

Poss a bit small but maybe...wot about 106 gti same but better? wot would the 1500 quid involve?

What about FTO's mivec? look nice but ive never been in one?

Magnex exhaust £300, Simota enclosed induction kit £100, piper decat £50, GMC manifold £250, cat cams 708s £350, chipwizards remap £450. Talking 160 bhp or approx 175 bhp ton. O-60, mid 6's 0-100 mid 16's, 1/4 mile mid 14's.

The Pug 106 is pretty much exactly the same car but more expensive due to image and rarity. I'm not a badge 'snob' so a vts wouldn't bothered me.

I reckon it'd have to be an impressive FTO to compete for that price.

From my experience, the VR6 handling is several leagues below the 306 GTi-6 or Rallye. I wouldn't think twice on that comparison, but the 306 will outhandle almost anything in its class of that era.

You might get an early Clio 172 for that sort of money, which are obviously rather well rated.

172 better than gti6? Ive had the older version of both cars 1.9 gti and a williams and they were both brilliant cars:notworthy

is there anything else out there poss jap? no crap mpg or insurance bills though:norty:

Mondeo st24? Probably not as much fun as the cars already mentioned, but pretty quick when rolling.

not really a ford fan - apart from cossies :notworthy but not really what im after, mind ive always liked the st200;)

If it came down to the VR6 and 306, then its the 306 without question.

Drove both back in 1998 when changing cars, golf was good, sounds good with induction/exhaust, but the 306 was leagues better in driver involvement, feedback, handling and stopping. Bought the Pug.

Great car - pushing out about 170bhp.... but handling like a go-kart ;)

Wouldn't change mine for world....... unless I want comfort & speed. The S4 takes care of that ;)

3k get a zs? is that the one based on the rover 45? always liked the zr - think they do 160bhp one which must be fun:norty:

Well there was something wrong with it then, because I used to get 37mpg out of my GTi-6 on a long run, around 400 miles to a tank, this is sitting at 80-85 in 6th, steady away

Agree that the ZS 180 (V6) is a very good drive; like the 306, handling balance is better than a standard UK scoob even if maybe ultimate grip and certainly traction are worse. However, they are genuinely pretty scoob-like on fuel. Sister-in-law has just got rid of hers after averaging 23-24mpg as a (urban) daily driver, hardly ever topped 30mpg on a run. 306/172 as lighter cars with smaller engines will be better on fuel. Final point is don't confuse fuel costs with total running costs; something equally poor on fuell but with cheap parts, infrequent servicing requirements, lower insurance etc will still be a fair bit cheaper to run than a scoob. If you just want low fuel bills, get a Gold TDi !!

Maybe its because i was sat at about 130 :wonder: , now i take the kids up there in the scoob i barely touch 80. Definately not as bad on fuel but still likes the juice. As for total running costs insurance is still group 16, not as high but still high.

I think it is insurance group 15 - ive had a quote for 250 quid - about 200 cheaper than the scoob!:thumb:

Been looking on the net and have found a nice looking rallye:luvlove: in white:luvlove: for a good price - hope to go and have a look.

Lighter and faster :thumb: no aircon:cry: not sure what else they dont have:confused:

Can i reccomend a honda civic Vti, around 1996 to 200? shape, think its the EK4? Fantastic engine, puts a smile on your face everytime you hit 5,200rpm!! and very very well built!

agree, but go for the Vti-S. 170 odd bhp. big enough for a small family, pirates black is the one to go for. I had a look at one before buying the classic scooby 2 years ago. they were going for £3500 then so you should get one for under £3k easy.

I had a 306 S16 and it was quicker than the 306 GTI-6 I test drove, I believe the s16 is quicker 0-60 because of the 5 speed box as apposed to the gti's 6 speed; i'd go for an s16 if your'e after acceleration and handling - they turn so quick too.

I had one with half leather interior, very nice to use as an everyday car.

The trouble with buying a 'cheap' sporty tyoe car is that you will still get the urge to spend money on it. Be it on brakes, suspension, exhausts, wheels, woteva ..... To really save money, get yourself a boring old TDi of some description and the bug will be kept (alomost!!) at bay. Plus cheaper insurance etc,


Anyway, with 2 kids you'll not have time to enjoy it!!!!

I have a Rallye and I can get 400 miles to a tank, mostly motorway driving 80-85 MPH.

If the fuel economy is thatbad is normally the lambada sensor (co2)

What about the 306 HDi. These can be chipped and modded up to 160BHP with oodles of Torque. See the Derv Doctor for modifying it! The car will still return 40 MPG all day long too :D

My vote goes to the VTS!!

Oh yeh, the S16 is good, nowhere near as good as the GTi6 ;) The 6sp box in the GTi is amazing.
The only downside (as stated, in all fairness ;) ), is the turning circle - it isn't brilliant on the GTi due to the big box.

INsurance costs me about £240 ish (34, clean license, living in the countryside)

agreed about mpg - circa 400 ish ;)

Gti-6's are quicker according to Autocar, most S16's are getting pretty rough nowadays and personally the seats look crap..

There are a lot of differences between a Gti-6 and the Rallye - I am not usually bothered about many creature comforts but for only 52kg less (supposedly) you lose a lot. Here is a list taken from the 306 BB:


1) No Electric windows
2) No Electric wing mirrors
3) No Leather steering wheel
4) No Passenger airbag
5) No Side airbags
6) Less sound-deadening
7) No front fogs
8) No external temp sensor
9) No hear headrests
10) No leather seats, pheonix cloth instead
11) No aircon (optional extra)
12) Rarer (Around 491 made)
13) No Heated wingmirrors
14) No CD changer (optional extra)
15) No Auto wipers
16) No Alarm
17) No Deadlocks
18) No adjustable lumbar on seats
19) No dash dimmer light
20) Decent sized main glovebox & extra upper compartment
21) Lightweight decals, not badges
22) Only 3 colour choices, red & white no charge, black (£250 optionUnsure )
23) 1 piece rear seat backrest, and bottom
24) No rear interior light

you can get a zs for 3k.

if you want the same weight as the Rallye, without the pov spec, then get a Phase 1 GTi-6 ;)

I had a Rallye first, then a couple of other cars and when I came back to 306 ownership I got a Phase 1 GTi-6, which I preferred
