Tax a car if you're not the registered keeper

Is it possible to tax a car if you are not the registered keeper yet? Current owner is abroad and I am the legal owner and will have insurance and MOT.

Can I just fill out the tax application form at the Post Office rather than wait to get my mitts on the reg document?

yes think it is a v11?

you cannot do it online as the disk will get sent to the old owners address if they haven't processed the log book yet.

Thanks - yes I'm just looking at the dvla website now and the forms required etc.

Yes no problem. I do this all the time with the family cars. I am only the registered keeper for one but I end up paying to tax the lot!

moonloops it a bit of a gray area, if you don't have the v11 then you won't be able to do it at the post office, and if your not the registered keeper you "shouldn't" be able to tax it, not say you won't just depends on how eagle eyed they are in the post office. if you don't have the v11 the dvla local office might be able to do it for you and change the keepers over at the same time. hope that's of some help :)
