4 pots

looking to upgrade my early classic to some later 4 pots / disks, where s the best place to be looking for these calipers and how much are we talking..

also whats the difference between 4 pots with a flat front to them and 4 pots with raised "subaru" writing????

sarnyboy 26 March 2007 09:16 PM

anyone???

wrxsti280 26 March 2007 09:34 PM

depending on where your based, you could try grade-a subaru, forresters subaru, central subaru, jap performanc eparts i could go on and on, if you get any of the jap car mags, theres loads of breakers, they sometimes come up on ebay as well. probably looking at 200-300 quid depending on condition, and that should include the slightly bigger discs and pads, again pot luck as to condition.

dont think there is much difference between the flat or raised lettered calipers but not 100% certain

I am also interested in this upgrade how easy is it to upgrade fro 2 pot to 4 pot ? Will i retain the original 2 pot brake hoses or do i need the brake hoses of the 4 pot caliper and also is it a straight forward job for a limited experience DIY mechanic ? Any one fancy making a guide on whats needed and how to go about fitting?

dan83590 28 March 2007 12:42 AM

I started mine tonight.

Needed.

4 pot calipers and pads
4 pot type disc's
Copper Grease
Tools and know-how
Eazi-bleed or simalar (I used a Halfords one man jobby)
Brake fluid, Dot 4 or 5.1.

Advantageous.

Braided Hoses

I'll take some piccys when I do the other side. It really isn't too hard if you are mechanically minded.

myblackwrx 28 March 2007 08:16 AM

Straight swap, as dan said buy some braided hosing for about £60.
I've only seen Subaru 4 pots with 'Subaru' embossed on them never without (plus i think they look better under the wheels with subaru writng).

alcazar 28 March 2007 10:33 AM

Did the original STi's and WRX's have 4-pots without the writing? I know 4-pots WITH the writing came in on the 1999 UK cars......

Doing the swap is easy enough. Just make sure that you fit the calipers with the bleed nipple at the TOP :)

You can also buy a clamp to clamp up the brake hose to stop fluid loss, or keep it to a minimum, but I'm not sure it's worth it. The one-man brake bleed kits are a Godsend, but I'm unsure about the idea of using a "jobby" I reckon the smell alone would put me off.......:D

The original wrxs/stis only came with 2 pots (93-96) as far as i know don't know about later versions.

jasonius 28 March 2007 11:38 AM

Red 05> 4 pots have 'smooth' writing on them..;)

This helps them stay looking good IMO, unlike the earlier unfinished ones that look like a corroded battery in no time..!

I'm about to take some pics of mine so I'll post them up (got to take some anyhow as someone's interested in having them off me if all goes to plan..D))

Tazz Kill Er 28 March 2007 02:04 PM

I found that if you press the brake pedal down and hold it when you change the hoses, the fluid loss is reduced, i used a piece of 2x2 against the seat.

projectsubaru 28 March 2007 05:10 PM

Right looks like i will be doing this modification as soon as posible are braided lines worth it or shall i stick to the standard rubber. I currently have the 2 pot with red stuff pads and find them ok untill travelling at high speeds when the become inefficient.
Cheers

project if you're going to change the calipers you may as well go the whole hog for the extra £60.
When mine where done (after a bedding in time) the brakes were excellent (especially after having 2 pots) now braking from 'ahem' speeds is a lot less of a worry.

i take it 4 pots wont fit onto the 270mm disks 2 pots have

totalllama 09 April 2007 09:22 AM

No 4 pot discs are 295mm (MY97- present).

For Ref.

2 pot turbo discs are 277mm (MY94-MY97 + the sport models).
STi Brembo's are 326mm (MY02 - on).

I am also thinking about this mod and I have a MY98 WRX which currently has 2 pots, would my discs be 295mm or 277mm??

Did Subaru make a 295mm disc with 2 pot calipers?

swifty74 09 April 2007 08:14 PM

my 1998 v4 sti import came with 4pots front & 2 pot rears with the raised writing on them ! ;-)

so is this conversion a straight swap or are there any adaptors or different mounting brackets required to get them to fit?

Straight swap, the hubs, and hose connections are the same. They even went onto my '94 Legacy with no problems:D

Unless of course you count the previously highlighted bleed nipple thing:rolleyes: I was in a rush, it was going dark and starting to rain OK:(

stevem2k 10 April 2007 10:26 AM

Straight swap. You might want to check your wheels clear the calipers before you start though...

Nate 11 April 2007 07:02 PM

I have a set of 4 pots for sale with pads that have 3/4 life still in them and braided hoses (for front) £250
