I was involved in a play with a Boxster some months ago (albeit the Non S Version) - I was in UK Turbo with PPP and full decat.

This was a the Newark To Ollerton Road Heading Towards Chesterfield.

Obviously mine was no STI and his was no 'S' but have to say there was nothing in it - these were long roads with few sweaping bends.
Acceleration was identicle and as hard as he tried to loose me he could not.

Maybe if Id had a remap may have given me the edge.

Both great cars but would prefer a proper porka ;)

Both great cars but I'd prefer a proper Impreza.

Have you driven BOTH cars?

Have you ever considered that not all cars drive the same, even though the badge is. I've driven cars from the same manufacturer, same age, same model yet one seems to be faster than the other. I bet there are Porsche's and Imprezas out there that on paper are identical yet drive so different as there are good ones and not so good ones. You must have noticed this when test driving the same models before buying a used car.

Both quick and enjoyable cars yet personal taste will determine which one is your cup of tea.

I have driven various versions of each model yes.

The Boxster was not my cup of tea.

Why not just do a poll (i dont know how to set them up). People will argue about which is 'better' till they're blue in the face, ultimately people are going to buy what they want. People value different things.

You're given 25k and you have to have one of the following - can be second hand/modified, whatever. Which would u choose?

a) 25k of Porsche Boxster (S or standard)
b) 25k of Impreza (any model you like - sorry dont follow model designation anymore)

But this is an internet car forum isn't it?!

Maybe we should talk about dishwashers or something?

Anyway, surf good, up tomorrow to get a sound beating from the Atlantic.
I have no girlfriend. But I do have a wife.

So a 240bhp scoob matched a 240bhp porsche - I am suprised. With those performance differences Id have expected him to spank your arse lol.

I raced a mates old 260bhp shape 'S' in my standard Turbo 2000 (218bhp) and I did get toasted specifically handling and braking wise.

As a passenger we were literally speeding towards a roundabout with me thinking has my mate actually seen it? Jumps on the brakes and very good stopping power. Also handles like a go kart - was like glue around the corners.

I will admit to being one of those who used to call them a hairdressers car etc. Until that race and then being a passenger in my mates 260bhp S. You just dont see that many being driven fast so just assume but that is a mistake. After that point Ive been a big fan and if I had the money Id have one in a flash but would have to be an S. Guy at work has the latest shape 987? and looks a lot more agressive IMHO.

Just to keep this one going....

I was an owner of Sti Type RA and have to admit that in the 4 months I was looking at buying a new toy with a 20K budget that a boxster was the last thing on my mind - in fact when it was suggested I made the hairdresser comment (shamefully).

Right up until the last minute I had set my heart on a black E46 M3 with SMG - after test driving one it was confirmed that it was a quick car and had the luxury element I had missed from owning the stripped out RA impreza. It just so happened that the dealers I went to also had a boxster S, which the girlfriend said I should try out. I went for a test drive and bought it when we got back to the forecourt.

For me the plus points were:

Performance - very different feeling from the STI, not the same acceleration off the mark but kept pulling and pulling.

Handling - goes round corners very well with more confidence and a different feeling to the scoob.

Sound - great Porsche flat-6 burble, which will sound even better once I've put a tubi on it!

More of a sports car feel than the M3 - although if I have children the M3 would make more sense.

In summary, I'm very happy with the Boxster S so far and urge anyone to try one before ruling them out.

More proof that most people who don't like them, have never driven one.
