Haldex i would imagine is better once rolling due to only putting the power through two wheels thus eliminating awd transmission loss, possibly why on the road and not on paper the reason why cars like the R32 and A3 are not a million miles behind a Subaru WRX.

I've had Intergra's and CTR's give me a good run and they are a good 70-80 bhp down, i can only put this down to transmission loss and atmospheric temps (i.e. a summers day) on the Subaru. Oh and plus i'm a crap driver:D

Can't comment on torpid but I have 2 rather nice personal protection trained dogs, a Doberman and a Malinoise.

Not sure how much help some of the other posts have been but I thought I'd chip in with a few suggestions - about 3.5K hatchbacks that might be fun! (I can't be bothered to trawl through the 9 pages or so looking for some of the other recommendations - so do forgive any duplicated suggestions)

Ford Puma? 1.6/1.7 supposed to be quite nice to drive, look good IMHO - not sure about price range thou

Ford Fiesta 1.6iS - same chassis as Puma(?), more cooking bodyshell - prob a bit cheaper

Ford Ka Sport - Low tech, low power, but pretty new and fun to drive. I've driven a couple of 1.3's and they were a hoot.. Not fast, just fun!

Pug 306 Rallye / GTi - Nice cars, supposed to be a great drive, like my old ZX Volcane but with better engine.

Civic CRX - Not driven the older shape, but my brother has the Del Sol. Not the fastest (if you get the SOHC) but quite good fun, plus it's a targa.. So falls on the hatcback bit I guess

Prelude - Always liked these, not particularly fast unless you get the 2.2VTi

Saxo / Pug 106 - Ubiquitous, but cheap, fun if you can live with the chav associations!

As a leftfield suggestion, a car that I had before getting my MX5. An Ignis Sport. Can pick these up now for around 4K if you shop around. It's newish, a hatchback, japanese and reliable. Not quick but pleasantly zippy, fun to drive, a bit dodgy build quality (rattles, stonechips) but you can hoon it around and get 40mpg. Miss mine a bit, but I've now fallen for a new mistress... RWD

Would recommend a late mk2 golf 16v.I spent just under £500 uprating the brakes and suspension and it was fantastic after that.Build quality was fine.Kept it for 4 years,sold it for what I paid for it.I had a memorable run thru North Wales against a Volvo T5r for a good few miles and he omly got past on a dual carriageway when I ran out of steam!

Had a mk3 gti,wasn't too bad on the motorway,spent a bit of time in the garage,getting warranty work done(leaky fuel tank,immobiliser,alarm).

Had a mk4.load of ****e in standard trim.Lowered(Vw approved suspension) it along with 17" Audi TT wheels,looked great,unfortunately reliability wasn't its greatest fortay,as it had a new clutch,2 driveshafts,immobiliser,fuel pump all replaced under warranty,all within 2years of ownership.Later sold it for Astra Sri Turbo.
