Haldex i would imagine is better once rolling due to only putting the power through two wheels thus eliminating awd transmission loss, possibly why on the road and not on paper the reason why cars like the R32 and A3 are not a million miles behind a Subaru WRX.

I've had Intergra's and CTR's give me a good run and they are a good 70-80 bhp down, i can only put this down to transmission loss and atmospheric temps (i.e. a summers day) on the Subaru. Oh and plus i'm a crap driver:D

Help me here mate - you have a nice dog, so that's a plus you have over torpid at the moment.

Can't comment on torpid but I have 2 rather nice personal protection trained dogs, a Doberman and a Malinoise.

I can imagine two killer dogs are needed quite often in your household :lol1:

We manage with a soppy and well trained little black lab puppy and no "protection" is needed here. :Whatever_

That's right, you got it wrong, it takes a big man to admit when he's wrong. Either that or some dolt who is constantly finding himself talking out of his rear orifice.
Anyway lets move on and maybe there will be more things for our less gifted contributors to pick up as we go along. I'd take mathews opinions with a pich of salt from now on however, unless he's giving an opinion on colour or something simple like that.

All going fine though I can't imagine Cipher ever admitting he's wrong.

Then he cocks it up and blows all credibility with this line...

You just can't help it can you?

I can guarantee I've had more professional driver training than you.
I can guarantee I have driven a wider range of cars than you.
I have never crashed, never had a point on my license and hold two insurance reducing drivers qualifications.

I may not own anything very quick but have done and have access to an awful lot of very nice machinery both road and water based.

So leave the patronising and try and introduce the idea of non destructive humour.
Probably a little too much for your single tracked mind and your complete lack of the most important intelligence - Emotional intelligence of which you have none.

I'm not quite sure what the above bleatings are meant to prove or how they are relevant but how can you say

"I can guarantee I've had more professional driver training than you."

"I can guarantee I have driven a wider range of cars than you"- largely unimportant anyway as you obviously haven't got a clue how any of them actually worked

Without actually being aware of my background they are statements you simply cannot make, be they true or not.

Also what is 'emotional intelligence'? It sounds like bull**** doublespeak to me.

Emotional intelligence - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

My supposition is confirmed!

It's bull**** double speak which is what I said above and provided a link to.

Feel free to ignore me. I understand completly that as you've been given a sound drubbing you'd rather pretend I didn't exist. No problem at all.:lol1:

lol

You were doing ok until you tried to prove your "superiority", Mat.

Scoobynet doesn't generally stomach "I've got more than you " type posts. Just gives certain posters more ammunition, to be honest, and makes you look a bit desparate.

You'll learn with time :)

You may well have all that training, but you (apparently) can't figure out what is so basically "wrong" with a mk3 golf from a driving perspective. Are you sure you are not AudiLover?

"Qualifications" are irrelevant if not backed up with the ability to demonstrate understanding.

And you may 'eventually' learn that this kind of post doesn't contribute anything of any value to this thread.
Contribute, or button it! :nono:

The V6 is very muted, the steering is vague but as usual it's very nice to sit in and the brakes felt better.
The R32 is a quite a bit more sporty but then I do like the "stealth" image of the A3. It's pretty much the same engine so with some AMD and Milltek treatment, it should push push out a tidy 300bhp too!

A 3.2 A3 s-line is faster than the R32 MK4 and MK5 Golf. ;)

Not sure how much help some of the other posts have been but I thought I'd chip in with a few suggestions - about 3.5K hatchbacks that might be fun! (I can't be bothered to trawl through the 9 pages or so looking for some of the other recommendations - so do forgive any duplicated suggestions)

Ford Puma? 1.6/1.7 supposed to be quite nice to drive, look good IMHO - not sure about price range thou

Ford Fiesta 1.6iS - same chassis as Puma(?), more cooking bodyshell - prob a bit cheaper

Ford Ka Sport - Low tech, low power, but pretty new and fun to drive. I've driven a couple of 1.3's and they were a hoot.. Not fast, just fun!

Pug 306 Rallye / GTi - Nice cars, supposed to be a great drive, like my old ZX Volcane but with better engine.

Civic CRX - Not driven the older shape, but my brother has the Del Sol. Not the fastest (if you get the SOHC) but quite good fun, plus it's a targa.. So falls on the hatcback bit I guess

Prelude - Always liked these, not particularly fast unless you get the 2.2VTi

Saxo / Pug 106 - Ubiquitous, but cheap, fun if you can live with the chav associations!

As a leftfield suggestion, a car that I had before getting my MX5. An Ignis Sport. Can pick these up now for around 4K if you shop around. It's newish, a hatchback, japanese and reliable. Not quick but pleasantly zippy, fun to drive, a bit dodgy build quality (rattles, stonechips) but you can hoon it around and get 40mpg. Miss mine a bit, but I've now fallen for a new mistress... RWD

Hope this was helpful, good luck with the search, enjoy the test drives and let us all know what you get!

Steven

Would recommend a late mk2 golf 16v.I spent just under £500 uprating the brakes and suspension and it was fantastic after that.Build quality was fine.Kept it for 4 years, sold it for what I paid for it.I had a memorable run thru North Wales against a Volvo T5r for a good few miles and he omly got past on a dual carriageway when I ran out of steam!

Had a mk3 gti, wasn't too bad on the motorway, spent a bit of time in the garage, getting warranty work done(leaky fuel tank, immobiliser, alarm).

Had a mk4.load of ****e in standard trim.Lowered(Vw approved suspension) it along with 17" Audi TT wheels, looked great, unfortunately reliability wasn't its greatest fortay,as it had a new clutch,2 driveshafts, immobiliser, fuel pump all replaced under warranty, all within 2years of ownership.Later sold it for Astra Sri Turbo.

hope this helps
