Sky Broadband - Connection Problems
 

My parents have recently had Sky broadband installed but are having serious connection problems. Once connected, they are finding that it is constantly dropping the connection. It is dropping the connection atleast 2-3 times every 15 minutes which is useless. They have spoke to Sky and they say the line is fine (they said it was running at 400ish, whatever that means). Is there an updated driver for the wireless router (Netgear) or anything else they can do to stop the disconnections? At present they are looking to have broadband removed.

Is it plugged into in the master socket ?

The wireless router is plugged into the LAN connection on the back of the PC from port 4 on the back of the router (that is how the sky Engineer plugged it in)

where is it connected to the telephone line though... the master socket or an extension ?

Through an extension

Move the router to the master socket, make sure there is only one filter on the line and connect the pc wirelessly. You may need to purchase a wireless usb dongle or card.

Is this a common problem? I have BT Broadband which is connected via an extension and have never had any problems with it.

I'm a bit confused... the connection is dropping and Sky are telling you the line is fine ??

As suggested try removing the extention see if that helps, if not get back onto sky until they find the issue

ADSL 2+ is more sensitive to line noise than the old MAX services and *should* retrain the line down dynamically. What happens is the router isn't particularly good at training down and once your line snr reaches 6.5-7db it will drop the connection.

Moving the connection to the master socket removes some of the 'noise' , and I found switching the inline filter to a faceplate one helped too. If the computer is a desktop in another room , a pair of homeplug ethernet over power adaptors provides the most stable permanent connection.

On 2 meg my SNR went up from 22 to 27dB by fitting the older version of this, also worth looking at the reviews to see how much they can improve peoples lines and also, no need for filters anymore:)

I 've just had Sky install with the same problems in ther 1st few days, but after afew days all is fine :)

Are you using a wireless computer?


The thing with Sky is , they share there connection - it depends how far down the line you are , the closer you are to the server the better connection you will get

I use sky 2meg and dont have many problems, at least it's free!

to help we need to know what sky package you are on (broadband wise) as only one of the packages (the max) is through sky's own technology in the exchanges (LLU) the other packages min and mid are normal 2mb broadband and adsl max. Knowing which you are on will enable people to give you better advice.

In all cases though, I would get a filtered faceplate and try the router in the master socket
