Forged pistons
 

Hi there,

I'm currently purchasing parts for the rebuild of the engine in MY95 STi RA and i'm after some advice on pistons and also trying to find out what make of forged pistons people use on here.

As well as which brand people use does anyone have any thoughts on CR etc. that they'd like to share? Brand wise i've heard that there has been one or two problems with JE's

I've already bought some Arrow rods and gotten myself a set of commetic gaskets. I need to sort out pistons and possibly a crank depending upon condition. Anyone got any GEN on the v9 crank or will a straight replacement for my v2 be ok?

P.S i'm chasing 400-425 bhp ish

Have a look at the Wiseco piston range Mongo - quality stuff and a reasonable price if you make a few phone calls( API,Lateral Perfermance etc).
As for the V9 crank - its a rear thrust crank and pretty sure your V2 would be a Center Thrust crank.

Cheers mate. I knew about the thrust washer/bearing and I know of a motorsport company who will do the engineering work on the block for 45+vat.

As I understand wiseco are part of JE group.

How can you buy gaskets, before you have bought the pistons, when you don't know what the CR will be ?

Wiseco, & JE are owned by the same company, but they are very much independent of each other, when it comes to product.

I've not heard of any issues with JE, but I do know that Wiseco have been more than proven, being used in two of the 9 second Subaru's in the Uk.

The STi9 crank is cross drilled, and heat treated. It's not that much more than a standard crank, so if you can get the block machined, it's worth the little extra.

Gaskets are sandard thickness, CR will be altered by piston bowl or combustion chamber size. Having a thicker head gasket will affect squish?

I wouldn't suggest going thicker, but depending on the CR you want, you may even fit a thinner gasket, with a lower compression height piston.

You really want to buy something that's "available" rather than having a custom piston made.

Personally, I wouldn't want to rely on removing material from the combustion chambers.

why anyone consider about Mahlempistons ? I have heard lots of good things about Mahle but i dont know why tuners only prefers JE, Wiseco or CP

we use Mahle quite a lot, but generally not designed for very high target cars..............................

A friend of mine sent these pictures recently. They are wisecos and eagle con rods He told me that everything was right before this happens. I think it mainly an installment issue but I'm not a specialist so not sure.

It'd be interesting to find out wether it was a piston faileur or not mate?

Fair enough then mate... I'd have thought there would be severall variations of CR from off the shelf pistons?

hi mate, your best bet is purchasing from the USA, the exchange rate at the moment is awsome and the prices there just cant be beat anyone in the UK ... I paid less than £400 for a set of eagle rods and arias pistons!!!
I know alot of rally cars that are using these pistons with no problems

I am using Wiseco pistons and Eagle Rods,

No problems with mine and currently running approx 360 bhp.

Although I didnt source mine from Mark at Lateral I can vouch for the Wisecos and I know he's one of the best suppliers in the UK of wiseco scooby pistons.
