WRX vs STi

Hey guys, long time member, first time poster here ;)

Should be buying my first Scooby tommorow in the auctions if all goes well!

Had a quick question though, have been advised to get the STi as thats the decent one, but the car broker emailed me a regular WRX to look at too. Apart from the obvious visual differences, what are the differences between a 5 speed WRX and a 6 speed STi??

The cars I'm looking at are below:

Thanks for reading :)

STI has :- 6 pot calipers brakes, better interior, DCCD, better suspension. more powerful, looks better and few better options!

IMHO i had a JDM classic for years and now have a MY05 WRX PPP UK - you dont have to worry about fuel, servicing, parts etc which is a major plus over the JDM cars.

Hope this helps

Always get an STi if you can afford it.

You get lots more kit, it's quicker, handles better, etc.

If you geta WRX, you'll always be looking at an STI with envy.

plus,s for Sti.... quicker..looks better..better interior..wider tyres/wheels. ...gold wheels standard..big spoiler as standard..6 speed box...RAC trackstar
against.....less mpg...hard ride..higher insurance.

Oh also, sorry, just noticed, one of the STi's is a Type C. Is this a better or bad thing?

Driver Controlled Centre Differential

Japanese Domestic Market

Not heard of a Type C, it is more likely a Spec C. Yes, it is better still.

davedipster 08 November 2006 03:49 PM

Is that Flat Eric in those cars?

dynamix 08 November 2006 04:05 PM

gotta go for the spec c if you have the choice :D

What auction are you going to ??

andythejock01wrx 08 November 2006 05:25 PM

WTD - Are you really in Tokyo mate ?!!

Gaz - How does DCCD work, does it improve grip and handling ?

Tilly 08 November 2006 05:27 PM

it enables more driver control over how the car handles, some people prefer cars to oversteer as opposed to understeer or vice versa and you can fine tune it with the diff control

iam on my 2nd Impreza at the mo, had a MY95 WRX JDM - was fast as f**k and now i have MY05 WRX PPP which is just as fast, both STi and WRX are amazing cars so alot of the time it comes down to your budjet!

Sorry to be a pain, but I disagree on a few points you have made:

Also correct, but this can also be uprated on a WRX too at a later date if really needed. Depends what you want to do with the car.

Based on what???? There are WRX's out there that are more powerfull than STI's too. It really depends on what mods have been installed. I do agree that however if you really want to upgrade to something 300+ though it's then better to get an STI (cheaper for the upgrade path). Also is power really everything? Think about weight too. The WRX is quite a bit lighter than an STI due to the weight of the 6 speed gearbox in the STI. My friend also has a STI which has the same power as my WRX. Guess what? I beat him every time due to the power to weight ratio. Around a track however I think he would win due to the better setup. So again, what is the car to be used for?

In your opinion...... I personally perfer the lower profile of the WRX. Although, I'm now saving up for a litchfield type 25.:thumb:

Are you sure you dont have an STi with a 5 speed box?? :freak3: :freak3:

Parked my MY05 STi next to a mates MY06 this morning and was thinking i was glad that i have the STi interior... because it is different (better colours / STi features).

Power wise.. as standard cars (which im sure the original poster is talking about) the STi is more powerful and can handle more power without modification.

DCCD also makes a difference on the roads, especially with it getting colder and damper (and i am talking within the speed limits).

And if your telling me that a standard WRX is quicker than a standard STi because its got 1 less cog then you should really write to Subaru because they made some serious errors.

dynamix 09 November 2006 09:06 AM

The only thing that a WRX has that I wanted on my STi is an EGT sensor ... why they dont put one on the STI I dont know :)

Differences are obvious when driving the two side by side. Plus there are numerous differences beneath the skin.

The DCCD is a great piece of kit and makes a real improvement on the road at normal speeds along with wider wheels, better brakes, stiffer suspension components etc etc. You have to mod a WRX a bit to get to STi performance levels but handling and braking are also a huge part of the equation and to modify those to get better starts taking a lot of money.

It all depends on the use of the car though - some people will be very happy with a WRX or even fit a PPP to it to get the power/driveability but it wont ever be an STi and will lose out to superior handling/braking/tyres/differentials & head turning factor.

You can mod a WRX up to STi level for a similar cost to the price difference between the two cars (other than the 6 spd box).

If you're going to mod both, I think the main difference is you have a head start with the STi and you can go further due to stronger internals and gearbox.

I don't have it on mine, but it would probably stay in Auto, if the car handles as it does now, can't fault it one bit. But then the mods helped that along.

Another gadget that wouldn't be used?!
