Wot's permalink?

Wots "permalink"?

davegtt 10 October 2006 09:33 AM

I noticed this yesterday, suddenly appeared from nowhere and does nothing when I click on it. wierd.

Rage! 10 October 2006 09:42 AM

It appears to be a link that points directly to the post (within a thread) in question.

E.g. so you can link directly to a post half way down a page

davegtt 10 October 2006 09:47 AM

What good will it do? Im confused as to this will help any of us.

stevencotton 10 October 2006 10:35 AM

It's just as it says, a permanent link directly to a post in a thread. Lots of people link directly to others' posts here, makes it easier.

davegtt 10 October 2006 10:41 AM

How though? How do I use it? I click on it and all it does it move me straight to the bottom of the page  Is it just me whos not getting this? saying that though I have a smashing headache today so that might be why.

It changes the address in the tool bar so if you were to send a link to a friend they would see the post you want them to read as opposed to the whole thread.

davegtt 10 October 2006 10:52 AM

Why cant I just click on the post number then like we used to. For example Id send you this link

https://www.scoobynet.com/6242196-post7.html

You see the post I want you to see and not the whole thread.

permalink

You seem to be able to drag the quick link on to the quick reply or your desktop to create a link.

Wurzel 10 October 2006 10:53 AM

Yeah well just clicking on the post number on the right of the post used to do that so why bother adding an extra pointless feature?

stevencotton 10 October 2006 11:16 AM

Sometimes links can be dynamic and change over time, a so-called 'permalink' shouldn't, but they do reference the same URL. Any dragging and dropping of links is a feature of your web browser, not the BBS software. Don't see the problem personally, don't even know what these icons are people are talking about :)

Copy the link and paste it into something when you want to refer to that post. Doesn't offer any value clicking on it there and then, it's referencing what you're reading at that moment.
