call that a moth???

Just found this beastie on my lawn - it is huge about 8 cms wingspan (although it is on its last legs now :( )

Anyone know anything about moths?

mgcvk 17 July 2006 11:43 AM

Its a Hawkmoth, I'm not sure which one though. Any colours on it?

Shark Man 17 July 2006 11:47 AM

Found this thing a week back:

http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k3...salib/moth.jpg

For an idea of scale the tile edging is about 80mm.

Quite a docile thing, wasn't too fussed about me poking it or when I shifted the wire :D

mgcvk 17 July 2006 12:06 PM

I can't find an exact match for either of these in my Moth guide. I suppose there are hundreds of types.

pretty sure it is the hummingbird hawk moth (http://ukmoths.org.uk/show.php?id=2198) - weird cos i thought it was a hummingbird the first time i saw it a few days ago.

Cheers for the hawk moth info :)

Ta, know what it is now :thumb:

And excuse me putting 80cm instead of 80mm....that would have been one huge moth :lol1:

mgcvk 17 July 2006 12:21 PM

Aha, well identified! I'll raise you a Six-Spot Burnet....though I think these are quite common.

What sentence can you expect from sexually assaulting a moth ?

pippyrips 17 July 2006 12:22 PM

just like the ones in silence of the lambs - better make sure you lock up the house!

dynamix 17 July 2006 12:25 PM

I was trying to capture it and eject back into the garden, to save it from an enternity of trying to headbutt the light bulb ;)

Jap Import 17 July 2006 01:51 PM

I belive its a Swallow-tailed Moth http://ukmoths.org.uk/show.php?id=100&bf=1922

And if any camera enthustaists needed to know...it was took with a SE W800i with Macro on and resized before posting. :lol1:
