Wasn't necessary, All Wheel Drive, said the other car manufacturers not even suche a long time ago.

For some reason AWD is very popular in the States. Mercs and BMW's over there have AWD on some models.

BMW and Merc produce AWD versions mainly for the people who live in places where it snows a lot! Eastern Europe / Apls / North America. They have never been sold here officially though.

Hopefully they will bring out a AWD 300bhp Focus then. Its been a long time since the Escort Cosworth.
Add to this the superb diffs & then you have a road going monster.
Bring it on.
