What is the best Cat 3 security device?! Disklock, Wheel Clamp, etc?
 

Does anyone have any knowledge regarding these devices ie is there any info available from the police, magazine tests on which ones can stand up to attempts to remove them for the longest period? Or has anyone had their car nicked despite using?

Disklock is your best bet - and get it from costco for approx £50 :thumb:

Yep - Disklok; my STi was wearing one when it went.... At least I hope it caused some sparks in their face as they were grinding it off...:(

I always go for the autolock style device, the type that lock the car in gear with the hand brake on, if used correctly they are a bitch to get off and are very easy to opperate and dont clutter up the car.

Davey - I was told they are pants - not too hard to bend a gear lever and keep gears operational.

Give it a crack, most selectors will comit suicide if you do that.

And to be fair they are all merely deterants, if someone really wants your car they will get it.. These kind of devices just slow them down and make it more awkward.

Thanks for the advice chaps and sorry you had your STI taken Diesel. Been trying to find tests and allsorts to see which is best but still no real progress. I remember years ago one of the lads car mags (Revs or Max Power) did a test where some ex-thief tested a number of different models to destruction and the one that came out tops was the Stoplock Pro steering arm job, but there must have been similar tests since then surely? Thing is my cars are under the watchful eye of CCTV 24hrs in a well lit area and I'm hoping that this plus the time it would take to remove a Disklok and/or wheel clamp would surely deter 99% of would-be tea leafs?

It will deterr all but the serious car thieves who will take your car pretty much whatever you fit. Oh and get a bag for it as well to protect your interior and stop it clattering around.

the round one that closes around the wheel won but he said once he knew where to attack it it was easy to get off

If you can afford it £350 will get you a clifford concept alarm with blackjax.
Even if they get your car going it will only be about 400 yards away once it has immobilised itself if they dont have your code..
Disklock is good. Some Police stations sell them cheaper for about £40.:thumb:

Wouldn't you also have to have the std alarm too? I don't think Clifford have Thatcham approval for Blackjax systems, so you'd have security that -despite being very effective- wasn't thatcham categorised and thus wouldn't be recognised by the insurers!

Of course, you could get the blackjax unit seperately and integrate that into your std system, which is what most people seem to get done- that way you get the best of both worlds.

Silver/Grey Disklok and Blackjax

Mine had the disclock and a Cat 1 - if they can defeat the cat 1 then the blackjax element also becomes inoperational as its just a bolt on that activates the existing wired immobilisation under certain circumstances.

They REALLY wanted mine, so it went; could have been anything.

Wish I'd had something more 'custom' or homemade as I always promised myself. For them to spend an hour rewiring ground to a cam sensor or fuel pump or ecu or coil pack etc etc would have been FAR more of an unconventional detterent; always said i'd put one in...:Whatever_ Still miss it.

I need a Disclock now and Costco no longer sell it :( any idea where i find a cheap new one?

If the police sell it is there a web site showing which ones have them, hope fully in London!

No idea where to find a cheap one, unless Ebay has some on there, but IIRC Top gear or some motor thingy did a test with these devices, and it took a ex pro car thief 19 minutes to crack the Disclok. :thumb:

but not all thiefs are pro`s , so it would be a good deterrant against the more average fcuktard

would be a good mod for an old classic though as no pro`s are gonna go near them (not worth enough cash to bother about)

wheel clamps are too much hassel (and can scratch alloys), the steering locks that actually physically cover the whole steering wheel are alot better, the gear stick ones are too easy to get off, simply snap the gear stick, and stick a screwdriver in, seen a few nicked cars and people literally poke a screwdriver in as a gear stick, highly amusing but does work!
