Can you weld die cast?

I think its die cast anyway...its off a nail gun that kind of broke when I was playing tin can alley in the cellar. The replacement is $90 from the states, but the nailer only cost me 60 quid, but it seems a shame to junk it. maybe TIG & an ali rod?

16vmarc 17 April 2006 08:10 PM

You may be able to TIG, i'm not too sure. I doubt it will be the same again though.

what about that 2 pack metal you mould in your hand,

thats meant to be as strong as steel

can you put a picture of it on here( the broken bits)
are you sure its alloy
you can but depend on a lot of thing (is it old or new alloy, quality of the alloy and is the broken bit load bearing

Ray_li 17 April 2006 11:12 PM

Can't you machine a new bit that you've broken?

Chip Sengravy 17 April 2006 11:17 PM

not that easy...its some smaller parts attached to a larger casting that have snapped.

Ray_li 17 April 2006 11:19 PM

I might be able to braze it together

Chip Sengravy 17 April 2006 11:55 PM

I'll get a pic tommorrow...brazing means lots of heat, and it might shag the seals.

Ray_li 18 April 2006 11:28 AM

Glue it :D

TIG is hotter.

bootsy 18 April 2006 06:28 PM

16vmarc is right about tiging being hotter / and brazing
can you get the seals off. how close are these seals to the broken bit

Chip Sengravy 18 April 2006 06:57 PM

its a gas powered nailgun similar to a paslode, there is an exploded pic here, so I'd rather not strip it, as I dont fancy losing my hand if it goes wrong :D

bootsy 18 April 2006 07:25 PM

what bit did you break mate has it got a number

Chip Sengravy 18 April 2006 07:27 PM

Bit No 4, but its not so clear..looks more like an L

its the vertical cylinder in the middle of the pic, the lugs that hold the nail-rail assembly snapped off.

bootsy 18 April 2006 07:37 PM

not looking good mate
if you put alot of weld/braze heat in to that cylinder it will lose it's shape.
are the lug the same end as the seals

Chip Sengravy 18 April 2006 08:02 PM

lugs are at the bottom end... I might give the chemical metal a whirl, and the retap for the bits that fix to it.

bootsy 18 April 2006 08:05 PM

probably your best bet mate

T5OLF 18 April 2006 08:26 PM

Get someone with a stick welder and some cast rods to do it. Heat up the item before welding.

Chip Sengravy 18 April 2006 08:27 PM

cast iron rods?....for die cast ali?

Ray_li 18 April 2006 08:31 PM

Glue it
