Clio 182 cup questions
Just a few quick questions as I fancy getting on at the start of summer as want something a little more refined than my 106GTi but still want the go-kart like handling as I drove a 172 a while ago and loved it.
Im looking for a Black or dark blue one and basically don’t want to be paying more than £9.5k - So what year and mileage should I be looking for? - Is there any common faults to look out for ? - Is the warranty extendable and is it worth extending? - Also what insurance group are they? - Is it worth the extra £££ over a older 172 ? Many thanks sorry for all the questions :) |
The proper cups were only available in blue or inferno red.
Faults are dodgy exhausts and the usual Renault build quality. Mine has also had new coolant hoses and a temperature sender. I wouldn't bother with an extended warranty as the sooner mine is out of the dealer network, the better! I think they are IG 13 or 14. They seem to be priced quite well as there are plenty of them about. Remember, the first owner probably didn't pay list price. I think mine is ace but fragile and I'm glad I've got an A3 for longer trips. Steve |
Mine will be for everyday use but surely cant be anymore fragile than my 106GTi ?

As big al says, the 172 cup is a belting little car ,i;ve tried my mates against my MY04 WRX and there is nothing in it!( its a pocket rocket) I would be more tempted with the 172 at a good price!!

dodgey seal on the headlamp washers on the 02 plate cars ..... not sure about the newer ones.

Buy a mk1 172 and get nigh on the performance of a cup (slightly less, but more than a full fat mk2), a few kilos heavier but with Air Con and nice seats :)
And a hell of a lot cheaper. |

But you don't get ABS with a 172 Cup, which for a road car is a must.
Steve PS Yes Group 16 insurance according to EVO. I was a bit optimistic with saying 13 or 14. |

Funnily enough, after driving a AWD car, it's a miracle I have survived!
One car has no ABS and the other is a RWD death trap! |
I however am one of the few people on S'net who will hold up my hands and say, "I am not a good enough driver to stop a car safely in the wet without skidding into the 3 year old boy who ran into the road."
This is the reason why I like ABS on a car. Steve |
Whats the lift off like on these?
As on my 106GTi its so easily to control / very predictable and great for scraping off extra speed |

Also I dunno if I'd bother with the 182 cup, weight saving was minimal and would be better to have the nice interior/xenons etc come resale time :) Just get a full fat 182 with both the cup packs.
Weight saving with a 172 cup however was worth it. I'm the same, no matter how good a driver I think I am (not) the ABS has saved me a couple of times in dodgy situations :) |
We have a 182 with the Cup Suspension in Blue.
You state that you want the car for the summer, so I would suggest something similar to ours as you then have the Aircon for those nice carparks called the A12, A13, A127 and Southend. Now the 192 is coming £9.5K should easily get you a year old car woith less than 10k miles. If you leave the Stability and Traction control on, it is much like the EVO GSR of the hatch worrld. Take them off and you have loads of fun. Ive had ours sideways three times, messing about. Or you can get the Cup in a similar blue, be ever so slightly quicker on the road as not to notice and get hot when the sun comes out. IMHO the Cup/172-182 Cup Pack/172-182 standard comparison is much like the RA/TypeR/STI comparison for the classics. Once you get them all rolling, there aint that much in it over a short journey. except the comfort of the Driver. |
The 182 Cup does have air con.
It is also 0.1 sec quicker to 60 according to EVO however the seats are shockingly plain. The lack of toys is no big issue to me. It's a Renault so having less toys mean here is less to go wrong. Steve |
Some 172 cups have climate. Although it defeats the point a bit....but the lady wants it.
I've had 2 that do. Dave |
