Golf V5 or A4 V6 or Accord Type-R ?
Looking to get an old runaround that fast and not obtrusive (no I'm not a drug dealer :lol1: )
Just realised there's feck all worth buying these days for £5k to £6k Anyone any experience of the above ? or suggest anything else about this price range (saab 9-5 aero hot :wonder: ) I'd have to test drive the accord as I'm no fan of the vtec stupidity.. |
Cannot speak for the Golf or A4 but if you are not a fan of the VTEC then stay away from the ATR as its the last of the proper screaming VTECs. Not a lot before 6k rpm and then madness in a narrow power band.
Sublime handling and entertainment though. |

You should be able to pick up a nice late 90's A4 2.8 V6 Quattro for that money, and then youre looking at a nice smooth V6, 60 in just over 7 and 150mph.
BMW 528i might be another option - these are even faster, but the image does tend to go a bit 'council estate/drug dealer' at the sort of age you'd be looking at. |
A6? Mate of mine picked up a 2nd hand one a couple of years back for £6-7000 and I was stunned at the condition, would swear you were in a new car.

A6 and 528 are probably a bit big for what I need.. woth a look though :D
A4 V6 does sound promising.. |
Got an Audi (albeit an S4) - but the V6 is amazing :)
Mine's a 99S and looks brand spanking new inside  Lovely drive with plenty of poke (2.7 V6 Biturbo  ) Echo what others have said though - the VTEC (IMHO) takes alot of getting used to, as you have to work the engine to get the best out of it. I looked at one, but thought it would be more tiring than the Subaru to drive over a long distance. I get the impression that the Golf is a bit on the heavy side (read as slow), but I haven't driven a V5, so I'm not really in the best position to comment. The A6 is also very nice to. All I would say, is that with the Audis, check that you're happy with the fuel economy. Mine at best, is returning about 27/28 mpg on an urban run. 15/18 round town  (but it is fun!! :D) Dan :) |
Thanks Dan, most cars I have had did less the 15/18 mpg.. my CLK 430 did 11 :D:D
S4 would be nice but probably a bit expensive for what I want.. |
If fuel costs are no object, how about a 95/96 XJR?! Supercharged straight 6, not the V8 so only 320 odd hp. Plenty on trader for 4-6k...
Weird kind of runabout, admittedly. But rather good fun. Edited to add... I get 11-13 around town. |

Saab if you like mid range grunt, no real need to get a v6.

yeah - I had a 93 turbo - maybe a 95 Aero Hot will work well |
I bought a Golf Mk4 V5 about 2 weeks ago, it's the nicest car i've ever owned. Very smooth and quiet, plenty of torque (though not the same as a 320bhp Impreza), reliable (hopefully) and cheap to insure/service/run. It's averaged 31mpg since I bought it, and will do 40mpg if you sit at 60mph, not bad for a 2.3 engine. It's at least twice as economical as my Impreza was. :o
Mine was £7500 from a dealer, with 1yrs full VW warranty and breakdown cover. :) http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...n_P1/golf1.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...n_P1/golf2.jpg |
Nice - I suppose there are chips and stuff to improve the power etc.

I don't think I could put up with a car you have to rev so hard to make progress - but I wouldn't mind trying one! |
