STi or not sti, that is the question ? ?

I have an Imports WRX STI wagon on a 1994.
Its an imports.
It has all the sti stuff, seat, strut brace on front, ic water spray, identification plate being number 183/200, twin rear spoiler etc.

Now some guy is saying its not an STi cause the spoiler is too small, and its not got white dials, and it doesnt have a red top engine ?

Can someone explain as i'm new to this !!

What have i got ??

cheers
Dai:)

He is a ****; ignore him. Early cars didnt have a red-coloured inlet manifold and the big spoiler came with the later series-production cars. The number 183/200 indicates that its one of the last cars manufactured out of the second production run.

Cheers! thought it was strange that its badged up etc and not an STi.

What power would it be running then, 250 bhp ?

WIll it have aluminuim panels?

Steel crank and forged pistons?

I was worried !!!!:eek2:

Simon

Precisely.

250PS on Japanese premium unleaded fuel, which was about 99RON in 1994 I believe.

Aluminium bonnet; forged pistons only; although Chris Rees' book mistakenly states thay hey have a forged crank.

Worrying things is he's an importer !!! Obviously thinks he knows more than he does !!

Thankyou Tony; but if you look back youll see that Im usually right, because I only post on subjects where I know what Im talking about rather than just think I do (about cars that is, the rests all bollocks).

The only issue on which we have disagreed is petrol; and whilst I dont dispute that youve got friends whove done high mileages on 95RON: I still dont think that you should encourage people to try it.

Dai, with regard to 'importers'; I import cars from Japan myself (which I buy at auction) and in my experience most so-called importers dont even know where Japan is; let alone how to export a car from there and import it into Britain! You be surprised how many know f*ck-all about the cars (and indeed; most things) which they buy from ****e docks auctions: and dont even get me started on people who bought a car off an internet site ffs!

Red top - non red top

so, whats the difference between the 2???

GC8 20 November 2005 06:57 PM

If you mean the two production runs; then little beyond the plaque. Subaru built 100 of each variant and was pleasantly surprised when they all sold out; so they commisioned a second 'production-run' of a further 200 vehicles of each variant.

Hold on; I see that your questions defined by the title. The 'red tops' had the inlet manifold painted in a red crackle finish because it looks nice; theres nothing more to it than that. So much bollocks is talked about 'red top' engines like theyre the nirvana of internal combustion but its a bit of marketing dress-up and nothing more.

Thanks Simon, yeah thats what i ment. So its nothing to do with power etc. like the Nissan Sr20 with had a red and a black top.

People seem to be going on about red top like its worth 40 more bhp or something !!

cheers

How much power is a v2 STI RA then? And can i tell if it's an STI from the AMN?

GC8 20 November 2005 07:41 PM

The difference between a standard EJ20 and an STI improved EJ20 was 10PS in the early engines, 15PS on the C-Series cars and possibly 20PS on the later cars, even though they were all officially quoted as having 280PS, they were rumoured to prodouce 300PS.....

Theyre both the same and yes you can:

GC8 2000cc Impreza saloon
C The model year identifier; Subaru made 2 C-Series car just to confuse us 1995 and 1996*
4 The number of doors
8D WRX
7D WRX Type-RA
ED STI
DD STI Type-RA

The 1995 STI Type-RA was altered from a production WRX -Type-RA and it shares its AMN: GC8C47D
The 1996 STI2 Type-RA was a series production car and as such, it has its own unique AMN: GC8C4DD

Simon

* refers to the model year which is built between September and August usually, so a MY96 car may have been built in September/October 1995

Series-A MY93
Series-B MY94
Series-C MY95
Series-C MY96 AKA Series-C2
Series-D MY97
Series-E MY98 etc

Deja vu or what?
