only happens going into 3rd giving it a bit of stick doesnt do below 3000rpm get a notchy gear change compared to other gears also grinds a tiny bit if your over about 4000rpm,also noticed the other day on motorway if going from 5th to fourth to accelerate it grinds and can be hard to engage gearbox oil was changed about year ago with clutch not sure which grade was used anyone got any ideas hoping its not the synchros, cheers

You could try changing the oil but its been running okay on that oil all year?

If so, it may well be the syncro

Hia i had this problem on a my01 Subaru wrx,, I thought the syncros where knackered... So i changed my gearbox oil and same problem... So my mate came round and said that the gearbox oil velocity or something like that does matter... So off we went to subaru.. They filled us up a container with gearbox oil. And we put that into the box ... And hey presto noise had gone.. So the moral of the story is .. Get some gearbox oil from your dealership or find out what oil it is they use and replace it... Cheaper option first... The problems where with my gears 3 and 4 too

BOB'5- yeah think its been in there about a year could have been doing it for a while ie 5th to 4th dont use that alot only noticed into 3 rd recently so it could just be getting worse as oil breaks down not that i know much about all the different grades just trying to convince my self its not the synchros i think i did notice when i tried it from slightly cold twice that it didnt do it,so im praying it is the oil, thanks for the reply mate.

Hey scoobycat! how did you get with the gear oil change? What gear oil brand and viscosity did Subaru recommend?
Im having similar problems.

My local dealership recomended 80/90 to me.

Isnt that just basic cheap oil ?
