34mph in a 30mph zone is taking the p*ss!

On my way home this afternoon, after fixing my mums central heating pump and sorting out some repairs on my fiancee's dad's motor, I get flashed doing 34mph!
What p*ss's me off even more is that the camera is situated on Chatham Hill ( a fairly steep down hill road ) set do deliberatly catch people out.
Had a nice clean license for 6 years aswell!

Will they really do me for something so small??
Wonder if my nice small number plate will get me off? :norty:
Knowing my luck, they'll probably do me for that aswell. :Whatever_

GC8 23 October 2005 07:26 PM

Theres only a 27% chance that that camera is active in Kent so youve a three in four chance of getting away with it.....

Trap2Terrorist 23 October 2005 07:28 PM

What sort of camera was is? Gatzo, front facing, 'safety' van, etc.

fitzscoob 23 October 2005 07:29 PM

Wouldnt have thought that the camera would have even gone off for 34 in a 30...

Gear Head 23 October 2005 07:29 PM

Yup, it was the beloved 'Gatso'.

danwrx1980 23 October 2005 07:42 PM

i've been flashed plenty of times and had nothing when i'm not speeding, you'll probably find it was someone coming the other way or something!
by law you are allowed 10%plus 2, so in a 30 zone that is 35, due to the inherent inaccuracy of the speedo, and if you a NIP or FPN for less than this you can contest it i believe.
don't worry about it until it comes through mate.

Trap2Terrorist 23 October 2005 07:46 PM

Did it flash once or twice?

If it only flashed once, you're fine anyway as it takes one picture as you enter the markes zone and another when you leave it.

I've been flashed 'once' a couple of times, normally when I'm being lazy and coasting down to the speed limit rather than braking in advance.

dpb 23 October 2005 07:50 PM

34 i dont think so.....:nono:...as above 35 is the minimum !!!

i know the hill your talkin bout too .....bASTERDS...

Graz 23 October 2005 07:53 PM

Chances are the camera is faulty, seem to remember one locally that was flashing everything that went past for a spell!

Was that 34mph on your speedo? That would equate to about 30mph on mine comparing the speedo to my GPS.

Finger crossed for the next 14 days :(

Gear Head 23 October 2005 07:57 PM

yea 34/35mph on the speedo. Can't remember if it flashed once or twice, it was a foward facing camera, hence it takes a picture of the front of your car.
Wondering about my small number plate though!

Mick 23 October 2005 07:58 PM

Last time I got caught speeding on Chatham hill was over 20 years ago :lol1: - on a 125 motorbike doing 50 up the hill at 1am in the morning:Whatever_ ! Copper was a biker - so gave me a lecture, some chat & some advice but no ticket & let me go on my way... :notworthy - ahhh... the days with real policemen instead of virtual or robot ones...

"Put down the weapon... you have 10 seconds to comply..." :lol1:

Mick :D

Gear Head 23 October 2005 08:01 PM

oh how i wish it had been 'ED 209'! Atleast i'd of avoided the points, may have ended up being shot about 10 million times though!

justanotherperson 23 October 2005 08:13 PM

My wife got done for doing 32 in a 30 zone *rant*

actually done?

i mean did she get a NIP as i would of torn it up

GC8 23 October 2005 08:21 PM

You arent allowed anything by law. Youre referring to the ACPO guidelines but the camera partnerships arent bound by that. You can be prosecuted for travelling at 1mph over the posted limit.....

Gear Head 23 October 2005 08:24 PM

That's what I feared! What is the world coming to?? Camera's by schools, hospitals etc -Yes. But not on a fairly steep, down hill stretch of road, with no schools around!

if it was a forward facing camera then it won't be a gatso and it shouldn't flash at you (safety reasons)

If it was a gatso, then it takes a picture of the rear of your car so the small front number plate will be useless.

was there a car travelling towards you that may have set it off???

corradoboy 23 October 2005 09:05 PM

As GC8 says, the 10%+2 is only a guideline, NOT law. The posted limit is the law. When you first said a Gatso had got you and that your small front plate might get you off I thought you'd be in the clear as Gatso's can only do you from behind (oo-err!), but it seems it was a Truvello. They don't site sCameras near schools, hospitols, parks etc as it is a known and proven fact confirmed by government research that accidents increase near camera sites due to drivers attention being moved away from the road and the job of driving. All I can recommend is a trip over to www.pepipoo.com and a trip to Halfords for a Road Angel.

Ozzy_B 23 October 2005 09:07 PM

my mum was fined and given 3 points for doing 34 in a 30, caught by one of those "safety" vans, this was a couple of years ago though

Down the road from me there is gatso in a 20 limit on a downhill stretch. 20 meters before the camera it is a 30 limit and 20 meters later it goes back to 30 !!!!

We need a photo of that  It needs to be highlighted somewhere like Top Gear as if that is how it is then it must be the most ridiculous and blatant money grabbing effort yet :nono:

Is there an obvious reason for this..?

dexter 23 October 2005 11:26 PM

Mate, to be honest I think you`ll be fine there, as the Central Ticket Office for your area would not be able to cope if the cameras in your area were set so low. The amount of paper generated by a camera set so low would be excessive for the staff to deal with.

Yes and no !!! There is a school near by and there is a set of traffic lights for crossing in the 20 zone with the camera. In a way the camera makes sense as there are children around at school closing but, the main problem on the stretch of road is that the limit changes between 20 and 30 about 5 times in the space of a mile. You drive along totally confused as to which limit your in and spend more time looking at road signs and your speedo than you do on the road. It would be better to have the wole section as 20 than constantly changing limits as you follow some drivers and they brake hard, accelerate, brake hard.......

Will get a piccy where you can see the 30 - 20 -camera - 30 - 20 !!!!

dpb 24 October 2005 12:32 AM

some town planner gone mad.......<shakes head>

Staff? What staff? Tickets are sent out automatically through number plate recognition software, thats why i am hoping that my small number plate may have gave the system a few problems!

brihoppy 24 October 2005 07:45 AM

does anyone else find themselves almost constantly glued to their speedo these days rather than watching the road ahead...? especially in bloody roadworks...?!
