Baffled newbie

Hi all,
I'm having a mid life crisis and treated myself to my first scoobie, but I'm buggered if I can find out what model and it's rated output. Bought a Impreza cd off of ebay that was supposed to be the dogs danglies but it left me even more confused as my VIN doesn't match anything on the cd id plates except for the first 4 letters, hope someone can put this old farts mind at rest, here's the bit of the VIN that perplexes me JF1GF8BROBG******

and a photo of my new pride and joy............

PS, it goes like greased weasel **** !!!!

 I thought I was crap with PC's.

Only joking fella, enjoy your new car.

richiewong 09 September 2005 11:41 PM

VIN won't tell you much, look at the ID plate and find the model code eg CG8/GDA etc.

Then check against this http://www.sidc.co.uk/faq.htm (only if it's a classic though still waiting to be updated for newage)

To post pictures you need to register with a host such as www.photobucket.com upload your pictures there the copy the [img] tags to post's here

Not so crap at pc's as I thought I was, got it up eventually, but can anybody tell what model it is (estate ?) and it's rated output cos the wizzy thingy sounds great when you take your foot of f to change up.

Thanks for your help Ben, and there was me thinking I'd managed it all my ownsome..big red face.........

andy_scouser 10 September 2005 01:34 AM

its difficult to tell from the picture, what age is the car and give us a front picture too. The front bumper gives it away more.

BUT.... It looks like it could be an import jap WRX, with all the colour coding...possibly a MY99 if I recognise the wheels (although it looks like a smaller front scoop). So probably 280bhp/250ftlb. Lovely motor if it is.

Probably the best year for a WRX, version5.

although I may well be wildly off the mark as the wheels may be 3rd party.

Crosstalk 10 September 2005 08:30 AM

It's mid '96 or earlier, it has the indented bumper lines.

JTaylor 10 September 2005 08:32 AM

Need the model code on the ID plate. Will probably begin GC8***********.

I'm guessing however at late classic UK wagon (98-00) with 215bhp as standard.

MikeCardiff 10 September 2005 08:34 AM

The model is officially known as the 'Subaru Impreza Turbo - Type Ugly'

Power will be somewhere in the region of 4 bhp - or 5000 bhp or something, doesnt really matter as everyone will just stare in disbelief that anyone CHOSE to buy something so hideous looking ;0)

Very true .... and the smaller bonnet scoop, so its a pre-97/pre-facelift car.

Goldeneye 10 September 2005 09:51 AM

I'd say it's an early UK car, perhaps a 1994 or 1995 model.

Note the lack of roofbars which some UK wagons didn't have (not sure on the imports) and the presence of the side bump strip.

Wheels look like 15" inch Subaru GX versions.

Yep, possibly agree...the smaller scoop suggests early. The wheels look like an MY99> car though. Colour coding wasn't std then, or infact EVER on the uk cars....I am sure.

Are we sad or what ?:)

Evenin all,
Thanks for all the info and advice. Regardless of other detrimental 'quotes' I loves my little car, it feels tight and solid on all surfaces (except cobbles and we do have em in Swansea) and goes far far better than your normal sports cars/hatch so I'm gonna keep it.
The model code is GF8BK8D with option EE and it was puchased new in the UK on the 1/8/1994

It's a bit of a dog's dinner with the '99 wheels, colour-coded handles, JDM Sti wagon roof spoiler(could be a repro) small scoop, later style bonnet vents etc, etc.

How have you insured it? Did you get a list of mods, if any?

Bubba, most unlike you, "dogs dinner" to a newbie.
Uncertain provenance might have been more polite.
Wheels, more like year 2000?

:)

You're right... I did mean MY00 wheels... mine's a '99 with the earlier (aesthetically superior) design. :)

I should have been more polite to a newbie, but there are just so many "dog's dinners" about these days sometimes the irritation leaks out.

Each to their own, eh? ;)

Hmm. Yes, mine's 99 but I prefer the 00 wheels.

dpb 10 September 2005 11:52 PM

looks perfectly fine to me

The wheels are off a MY99/00 Sport BTW! :)

L66bad 11 September 2005 12:31 AM

Hi all,
It might be a dogs dinner to some of the more technically perfect out there but to me, it's my first and it's the dogs danglies. Unfortunately it doesn't have perfectly aligned bolts, I havn't given every individual part a pet name and I use it in all weathers to enjoy the ride, listen to the growl and have fun.
.................................................. .................................................. .......

I still have no idea what it's output is rated at, or what model is (or purporting to be)....
Have a nice aesthetically pleasing day....

dpb 11 September 2005 12:36 AM

Thanks for that Dpb, according to SIDC it's a MY94 WRX Impreza wagon 2.0l turbo. What's the WRX bit mean ?.
.................................................. .................................................. ......
Just to put the record straight for the more aesthetically perfect out there. the car was stolen three weeks prior to me buying it and all they took were the wheels, the seats, the bonnet and scratched up the paint , so it had the first alloys he could get at a reasonable price, a new alloy bonnet, a front set of comfy LEGACY SEATS (I'm looking for some proper ones at the right price...cheap) and a respray, obviously didn't mask the handles and all it cost me to drive it from the guys house when I bought it was my R reg Mitsubishi Galant auto. So once again, it might be a dogs dinner but to me it's a godsend.

dpb 11 September 2005 01:19 AM

LOL........sounds like the stealing was a blessing in disguise...:) - my sti seats gave me backache after 1/2 hr...:D

Cant remember what wrx stands for ,was told .............again sidc site...:)

Vegescoob 11 September 2005 01:29 AM

L66bad, welcome to our little playroom. The thick skin is just ideal. Lots of help about though and "current affairs" discussion if that's your thing.
Oh, Bubba and me, Wagonners too.

:)
