Whats the difference between 95 and 98ron

Just filled up my Euro WRX with 95ron and noticed a sticker inside the petrol flap which said use only 98 ron. On checking the handbook it says 'Your engine is designed to provide satisfactory performance by using unleaded gasoline with an octane rating 98 or higher. This octane is the research octane number. If unleaded gasoline with an octane rating of 98 or higher is not available unleaded gasoline with an octane rating of 95 or higher may be used. Use of gasoline with an octane rating lower than 98 will detract from engine performance and driveability'

Does anyone know how much difference it will make to use 98ron assuming you can get it and what if any problems am I likely to encounter if I keep using the 95ron the car seems to run OK on it.

What year is your car? Early Japanese Import WRX require either a Remap or Optimax+ Octane booster. My 00MY UK turbo runs OK on 95 Ron but far smoother on 97 RON or above. There's no hesitation or "pulsing" when using higher RON. Also I get on average an extra 60 miles per tank when using 97 RON over 95.

What's the difference between 95 and 97

? ?

About 5 pence around these parts.

In basic terms, the RON is the figure given to the fuels ability to prevent detonation.

There was a long-winded thread on here about 9-12 months ago with some extensive explainations. (Search through my posts - highlander68k and RON should turn something up)

According to the Autocar roadtest ( a red MY03 which is the same engine) it will run fine on 95 but to get the increase in performance over a MY01/02 you need to use 98. That was mentioned in the testers notes. The best test is to fill up with 98 and see if you "feel" a difference. I have had PPP on mine from new so have to use 98 (now 1.09 ppl where I live  ) so I can't comment
