Forester S/Tb

We've been looking to replace our current '98 Forester with a newer one for some time; but whilst there's several automatics up for sale we want a manual. Anyone know of any for sale?

Regards Obi

What box is Gavnik's car.?
I know it's not newer but if its a manual?

Andy Tang 01 June 2005 01:48 PM

Gavnik's car is an auto.

I looked into his car before I bought mine, but the insurance was the thing that put me off a JDM car! :o

£450 UK with modifications, or £750 JDM without modifications.

PALATINE 01 June 2005 02:07 PM

But Andy, It takes more than £300 to mod from 170 BHP to 240 BHP :D:D:D:D:D

ps How's the nipper?

Andy Tang 01 June 2005 02:47 PM

Nipper is fine, although she isn't really sleeping, which means Caroline and I aren't sleeping either!! :o

The car is a 'mum bus', so 174bhp is fine! :) Depends what mods! Wheels and ARB would have to be done on both, so they don't count! ;) Bleed valve, air filter and TD04 can be had for less than £300.

The less I spend on the Forester, the easier I can justify replacing my daily hack (Ford Ka) with something more interesting/faster! ;)

When's the wedding? How are the plans going? (Probably the most stressful time of my life a few weeks before my wedding, although we knew the day would go fine due the preparation and stressing before hand!)

obi 01 June 2005 03:11 PM

It's nice to see that amongst the Forester owners, the tone of postings is so much more sociable.....however, this is not finding Fifi a newer car....somebody must want to sell one...please

PALATINE 01 June 2005 03:27 PM

obi,
Have you tried www.autotrader.co.uk ?
there's got to be some in there.

Andy
the wedding is on 18th and we are currently experiencing the calm before the storm.
The madness is due any minute now!!!

stevem2k 01 June 2005 03:39 PM

how much you looking to spend obi ?

they are more difficult to find..but not impossible

Steve

obi 01 June 2005 11:29 PM

We'll spend up to about 12k, or I may sell one of the Legacy's and spend a bit more. I been looking in the normal sources..Autotrader, E & Mart, Fish4it and Findit but the manuals tend to be '96-98's. There is one later model on Autotrader being sold by a 'Forester' specialist but I went to see it and wouldn't have touched it with are barge pole.

PALATINE 02 June 2005 03:12 PM

theres a cuople of XT's in the autotrader for £13000?
dont know if they are man or atuo though

stevem2k 02 June 2005 03:23 PM

weedy uk 2.0 though. Have you considered the importer route Obi ?

The Trooper 1815 02 June 2005 03:27 PM

Saw a Import STi at Japfest, governed to 155mph. 'kin hell was it fast on the Track. Lapping like a maniac. Litchfield Imports. It was the dog's anyone else see it??

Lots of S Turbos and 2.0 XTs, but I guess by the title of the thread you are after a JDM with the extra performance.

obi 03 June 2005 09:00 AM

Yes, once you've owned an import it hard to consider a UK car. It's not just the extra bhp but all the other little extras...climate control, folding wing mirrors etc. I've started to look at the import route. As I understand it, at the moment there isn't a model report for jdm S/Tb's and XT's; only that someone (Litchfields?) has one for the STI. I've checked on some of the japanese auctions sites, a couple give indications of recent selling prices, and grade 4.5 S/Tb's are reaching £2-3k, XT's 5-7K and STI's about 12k. Add on 5-7k to get it into the country and on the road. If the report's existed I be quite happy going that route using one of the better known importers to source the vehicle. As I type this and thinking of the STI, I wonder if our '98 is too early to accept a 2.5 block....mmmm...what else...loom, ecu???

Obi

PALATINE 03 June 2005 09:55 AM

2.5 block will go in no probs ;)

obi 03 June 2005 10:33 AM

Palatine,

Have you done this or do you have knowledge of what's necessary. I assume that to get the best from this conversion just changing the block isn't sufficient. Surely you need to re-map the ECU and I thought that the pre '99 units were a bit crude for this.

stevem2k 03 June 2005 11:22 AM

2.5 + apexi powerfc will work the same as it does with the 97/98 scoobs.

obi 03 June 2005 12:00 PM

So..some thoughts on how much; and will the gearbox take it?

PALATINE 03 June 2005 03:40 PM

what is your power (BHP-Torque) goal?
That determines if the gearbox will hold also your driving style
2.5 bottom ends are about £1700 but I have heard of cheaper then Ecu remap or Powerfc remap which is what I would go for but its a personal preferance (sp) thing

Andy Tang 03 June 2005 03:52 PM

I'd factor somewhere in the region of £4-5k to get the engine in (if you're not doing the work yourself)

You will need to consider which turbo you want to compliment the engine, injector sizes as the standard ones are probably too small, replacement ECU and associated mapping costs, uprated clutch and gearbox (depending on power and how you use/abuse the car), uprated fuel pumps, uprated oil pump, fuel regulators, etc.

Also things like brakes if you still have the standard 2-pots, larger wheels, larger rear ARB, drop links, strut braces, maybe lowered springs, etc will all help the handling.

PALATINE 03 June 2005 03:59 PM

Whilst on the subject of bottom ends these are very nice IMHO

Crawford Performance

stevem2k 03 June 2005 09:20 PM

essentially go through a couple of the 2.5 threads in 'projects' with a calculator ... :)

400/400 would be nice :D

obi 03 June 2005 11:14 PM

OK, this is becoming interesting. The car is Fifi's daily drive ( no slouch behind the wheel) and is used 10-15 times a year to drive to the alpine regions. During these trips I'd tend to cruise down at about 120 then play on the the 'ups & downs'; so torque is more important that bhp. Car has the TD04 turbo as standard and the ARB, tyres etc have been done. Any idea of what could be achieved with just a bottom end, Apexi (or similar) and only upgrading those items required to match the turbo

Andy Tang 03 June 2005 11:40 PM

I believe Dyney has a relatively standard 2.5 block, making over 350bhp with a hybrid TD05. I don't believe the engine has been strengthen with uprate pistons, etc, but I could be wrong.

If that's the case, use a standard 2.5 bottom end, maybe a TD05 converted to front entry (as the TD04 may be too small), some 440/550cc injectors and then an ECU and mapping.

What modifications are on the car at the moment? De-cat and filter? Maybe worth looking at doing the ECU first and optimising your current set up. You should be able to get about 280, maybe 300bhp running on UK fuel with smoother power delivery. It might give you the umpth you want for now, then you can plan the 2.5 at your lesuire.
