Good idea or bad?

My friend has a Escort Cosworth in Hong Kong which has been neglected somewhat, it's been in the same spot for a number of years, he's letting it go next to nothing so would it be a good idea to importing it over here or what kind of problems could i face with the car being left for so long in the sun? It's very low mileage and is in excellent condition, just seems such a waste. The car is totally standard which is very rare with leather interior.

I imagine getting parts for them will be hard so what costly parts would i be looking for?

DJ73 13 May 2005 06:22 AM

it's better than being left in the rain ? :D cossie's go for good money if there in good condition , got to be worth bringing it over if it's going for next to nothing , but what part's do you want and why ???

r32 13 May 2005 07:24 AM

Well worth it I should think, even the parts are worth good money. Is it right or left hand drive?
Just do it ..............

HKSubaru 27 June 2005 09:20 AM

it is right hand drive and the parts bit, i was just wondered, what bits i might need to replace, after a car is left there for so long.

CrisPDuk 27 June 2005 09:44 AM

If it's been left outside exposed to sunlight, the leather, and probably the dash wil be fooked, but mechanically it should have come to no harm.

+Doc+ 27 June 2005 10:24 AM

How long has it been standing exactly? If its a very long time without moving then there are numerous things to check.
Seized Handbrake
Flatspotted tyres
Shagged springs and dampers
Perished fluids, oil, petrol, brake etc
Bad paintwork

I think the best way would be to see how much it would cost to buy the car and import it over here including all the relevant documents and balance that against what the car would fetch in parts.
At least then if the worst thing happens you can break sell the bits and not lose money :)

Fascinating. But have you restored it now or has it only just arrived in the UK?

pimmo2000 22 August 2013 07:10 AM

cool thread, will be watching how this progresses :)

Simon K 22 August 2013 08:08 AM

What a cool thread. So, how much did you buy it for and how much did it cost to get it over to the UK ?? Are you from HK ?? do you know the language, if not what where the issues ?

Is it up and running now ?

Ste RB5138 22 August 2013 01:03 PM

Good for you bringing it back, hate to see cars go to waste like that.
Being right hand drive is a big bonus as well. :thumb:

How long was it standing all together?

Wow! great thread!

Love to hear more.....

On another note, how old do cossie's look now?

Leslie 22 August 2013 02:02 PM

I could put up with being seen driving an "old" Cossie.

Les :)

warrenm2 22 August 2013 02:11 PM

Clarkson really loved these, hope you get it running sweet

classic Subaru Si 22 August 2013 02:37 PM

On my list once we get the house with garage. They are actually cheaper than the rarer 3 door cossie now, although the escorts seem to suffer with rust more than the older versions

Ash170990 22 August 2013 02:50 PM

gotta love an EsCos! very nice mate!

As good as the escort cossies are they will NEVER beat a fiesta st :lol1:

Sorry ash couldn't resist :lol1:

It actually looks pretty tidy under the leaves and dirt though a good clay and machine polish will make that look very nice

Wish 22 August 2013 03:18 PM

Lovely .... Can't wait for updates

SirFozzalot 22 August 2013 05:33 PM

Fascinating. Looking forward to updates. :thumb:

Well done for rescuing it. How do people let cars get in to this state? Why not sell it before it gets this bad or at least try to protect it from the elements?

*matthewturb2000* 22 August 2013 05:41 PM

that is very nice
