Self defence....what can you LEGALLY carry in your car?
 

Obviously you can carry tools like wheel braces,or stuff like cricket bats,but what about sprays or stuff like that in your glovebox?

Is it all off limits?

something they're pretty hot on in this country. even things like cricket bats and golf clubs they suspect. mate used to have a golf club in his till he got a verbal warning. suppose one club does look a bit suspect though..

A face full of de-icer will make most people think twice. Jizer, spray paint and other car related things are not the sort of thing you want in your face either :D

Cricket bats could be a problem if you have no reason to have one with you at the time. Get caught with one in December and it would be no good pretending you had a game earlier in the day.

I keep a fairly substantial Maglite in the car. This should be fairly easy to justify, emergency use incase of breakdown, reading maps etc.

A can of WD-40, de-icer spray etc could reasonably be expected to be kept in a car. Some of the more acidic wheel cleaners would make an effective weapon, best to keep some other cleaning stuff in the car too though.

Don't the police recommend the Maglite's?

although I don't use that brand I can confirm that if you spray it in the face of an attacker they suddenly have a change of heart and decide that screaming in agony is a better plan instead.

Buy a can of cheap car spray of a similar colour to the car. Make sure the little git gets a good colouring especially in his hair, ears and face.

If someone gets sprayed, it will be good identification for them later

Put both hands on the wheel and look at the traffic lights. Spray and lighter in glovebox, or door pocket.

I'll give you precisely two seconds to get your blowtorch going before my hands are round your throat. And I bet your life you won't manage it. ;)

Can of spray paint or de-icer with the lid off gets my vote.

I used to have one of those cartoon stylee spanners in the car. An old Whitworth spanner with an AF of about 1.5 inches and about 1/4 of an inch thick. It weighed a ton and I figured it was ok to have in the doorpocket as it was a tool. Plod pointed out to me that very few Japanese cars have either Whitworth bolts or any bolts that big for that matter.

Now I have a plastic 500ml coke bottle filled to the brim with water. I guarantee you don't want to get that round the face and it's handy for a refreshing drink after tw@tting the scrote.

I have one of those car window smashing things, which is like a small (but heavy)hammer about 6 -7 " long with a spike on either end and a cutting blade (for the seat belt ;) half way down the shaft. nice safety tool that fits just nice into the door pocket :thumb:

Oh yeah, a thought on storage - there are times when someone opens the driver's door to get to you. Keeping your weapon (oo-er) in the door pocket will then turn out to be a fundamental mistake.

I'd suggest a 3, 4 or 6 cell Maglite, as said, handy when it's dark ;)

I'm sure a pair of jump leads could be swung and used to defend yourself, or they'd make a fine garotte I guess.

Laser pointers might be handy, a quick shine in the eyes might do something.

The car itself is a pretty handy weapon too :D lol

use a can of spary paint on a car jacker and you will end up with a screw driver stuck in your skull.........unless you are all hoping to get jacked by the most pathetic baddie there is......i'd rethink the DIY commando stuff!

These sprays/de-icer/paint etc though,if they caused permanent damage to someones eyesight,couldnt they sue?

Pepper spray sounds like a good idea. Depends what you want to protect against. If it's road rage and confrontations then you'll have an idea something's up already and can prepare for it.

Unfortunately, as others have pointed out, thieves aren't in the business of standing around shouting, they'll most likely clobber the sh*t out of you with no warning (preferably from behind) and then drive off with the car. This is where you need something akin to the permanent dyes they use for money bags/cases etc.

I don't mind having a bright orange car interior if I get to laugh at a bright orange scrote or two.

I used to have a lightweight aluminium baseball bat in the car down the side of the drivers door in case things happened. That was a good tool, until the car got broken into and they nicked that amongst other things. been meaning to get a new one

Don't risk it. I know of a guy whose car was stopped at a roadblock just after the Docklands bomb. They found a Swiss Army penknife in the passenger footwell. He was done for an offensive weapon in a public place. Apparently, the inside of your car is an public place.

Although some sort of oil/paint spray is a good idea (one I would be willing to try), you may have to convince the courts that having it in the front of the car, and not the boot, was in some way justified. De-icer would probably be fine, even in summer, as long as something like a window scraper is also there to prove you don't clear out your winter kit in the summer etc.

One of those emergency window breaking hammers (complete with bracket to keep it near the driver) would be an idea. Totally justified being in reach of the driver and would ruin someones day if they are wacked with it 74 times (or thereabouts). :)

If you have a car with newish alarms on them they auto lock the doors as after the Engine is started so the only way for the scrote to get in is an open window

soon as an arm or head comes in hit the window button select first gear dump the clutch at 4k and take em for a ride

I have one of those fairly small fire extinguishers in the wee space between my seat and the inner sill trim. Handy for putting out small fires, and I wouldnt want it discharged in my face at point-blank range, or clubbed over my head.
