Electronic - Was It You - Tag in your car??

Ladies and Gents

We've been approached by a company which is producing a very clever device and offering it to scoobynet, and a number of other car clubs.

The device sits on your dash board, and is programmed with your "club" ID ("ScoobyNet" in our case, obviously) and your username / id.

When you get in range of another car with a device fitted, their club and username pops up on the LCD screen on the device to tell you who they are and what club they're from.

The idea is that you then plug it into your PC via a usb socket and upload your history to the server. There is then a leaderboard by club, etc to show who has been seen the most, who has seen the most other people, etc.

I think this sounds like a great bit of fun, so we're really interested.

They are suggesting the cost of the unit will be around £90.

I have no idea whether this would be of enormous interest here or not?

Could you please let us know here if you would buy one should we agree to do it?

Regards,
webmaster

I wouldn't buy one. Find it an odd idea personally.

Iwan 13 April 2005 04:49 PM

Sounds interesting, i might be interested. If it cost around £50 i'd be a lot more interested. :)

FirebirdUK 13 April 2005 04:51 PM

I like gadgets - I'd be intererested :)

Aztec Performance Ltd 13 April 2005 05:11 PM

too expensive

Bob

ScoobySport (SdB) 13 April 2005 05:11 PM

agreed re the price. its a shame it isn't more the 50 quid mark.

But to be honest, I would actually have one - although I'm a little ashamed to say that! :D

The reason, is that whenever a scooby passes me (erm.. I pass it sorry!) on the motorway I always think "wonder if he / she's a scoobynetter", so it would be quite good fun in that way.

Also, we could soon clock ourselves up the leaderboard when we go to meets / track days, etc.. and pick up 20 points in one day! ;)

Sad, but to be honest, I'd do it.

LMAO

Quite a cool idea  Personally I think £90 is bit too pricey £50 as a limit would seem more feasible to pay - maybe could be combined with Plus Member subscription?

Would also be handy little tool if your car gets nicked - A fellow member would find it easier to spot it being driving, so can tell the owner/poilce of its whereabouts (presuming its not been disabled).

speedystu 13 April 2005 05:49 PM

yep sounds a good idea, shuold sort out all those miserable gits who dont wave(thats if thay got one).

I could have it in the truck by day and the scoob at the weekend, where do i sign.:p

Allan 13 April 2005 07:04 PM

Interesting concept, but too pricey. Would be good if it could integrate into an Origin B2 or similar, this would save having another widget to find space for.

WHY, OH WHY?

cw42 13 April 2005 08:59 PM

I would probably have one @ £50, but £90, no way!
Could just about find space between my gauges, sat-nav and air freshener :)
How about a proper group buy price, and also a reduction in yearly membership if you have one?
chris.

Foxmod 13 April 2005 09:05 PM

I like a group buy if in order of around £50, I'd ask for one as a birthday prezzy ;)

Dave

scoobynutta555 13 April 2005 09:13 PM

£50 sounds about right, maybe you could tie a reduced price in with scoobynet membership and keep the higher price for non members.

How big is this unit etc

Jamo 13 April 2005 09:23 PM

same here, I would have one of if it was priced more realistically, again about £50 seems fair.

shaggy :)

SiDHEaD 13 April 2005 09:34 PM

I'm another £50 tops person. This is still rather a lot when you stand back and consider it's function/purpose. Cool for us saddos tho ;) :D Just a shame it can't be done cheaper!

Soulgirl 13 April 2005 09:47 PM

I'm in for a group buy price :) What a novel idea :D

BMWhere? 13 April 2005 10:50 PM

Hmmm... would be quite nice for when I'm back in the UK and can't wave as I'm driving a Kia Picanto hire car or something equally sh1te!

But then again I probably wouldn't put out any money for 'Nice' when I'm only in the UK every 4 months or so!

R25 sti 13 April 2005 11:17 PM

im into gadgets and toot on my dash, ill have one.although i live in herefordshire. i recon ill be bottom of any table.

pslewis 13 April 2005 11:31 PM

Scoobychick 14 April 2005 08:48 AM

I'm sad and I like gadgets and it sounds like a bit of fun so yes I'd buy one, not for ninety quid though.

I can't do the wave thing as I don't drive a scoob so I kind of miss out on all that so this would make me feel part of the gang again :D

Andy Tang 14 April 2005 10:02 AM

And like with all these things, when people have to put their hands in their pockets the demand will suddenly halve!!

JonnyStell@ 14 April 2005 11:24 AM

I agree with everyone, sounds like a good idea but no one is gonna go for it at that price. If theres enough interest this could be quite a new craze.

Ditto here, but I reckon as there would only be me and Alastair with them and we only see each other every few months I would not even make it onto the bottom of the leader board :D :D :D

PS 90 quid is to dear, 50 and I would consider it.

Steve

SPEN555 14 April 2005 11:55 AM

It's a bit chav isn't it? :D

Danbo 14 April 2005 12:29 PM

Nice idea but much too pricy, even at £50.

Apple 14 April 2005 12:37 PM

Just think of the hilarity that could be had at say, the NBO, with people driving round and round the rows just to get points...

who needs airmiles and filling station glassware ;) :p :D

and I'm with Danbo - still expensive at 50 quid

/old woman mode on/

what about when some scrote comes up to you and makes out they know you as they've got your username and then does you over for the car

/old woman mode off/ ;)

ex-webby 14 April 2005 12:51 PM

Agreed.

I think the price is too expensive also. I'll discuss this and let you know :)

Cheers

Simon

Isn't the electronic version of having your name in big letters on the top of the windscreen (with your current partners on their side, e.g. DARRREN TRACY) and maybe put a logo in the middle to indicate club and you've got a cheaper way to do things rather than the expensive electronic way ;) :D

Iwan 14 April 2005 01:56 PM

I'd happily pay £90 (or more) if it flashed up "5-0" for nearby plod, or "$$$" if there's a Safety Camera Partnership revenue van in the vicinity. :D

Then we could them a friendly wave too as we pass by. :)

Peanuts 14 April 2005 02:47 PM

no thank you.
