STI8 i/c or Hyperflow
 

Looking to upgrade the intercooler on my v5 STI. Is the Hyperfolw worth the extra money over a STI8 or would you never notice the difference?

the hyperflow would probably bolt straight on the sti8 would need a lot more work to fit and the v5 dump valve won't fit. have a look at 911's thread in projects. thats fitting sti8 to v4 but apart from dump valve everything same as 911's. would think the sti8 intercooler better due to its size.

Fits alot easier onto the later cars due to the location of the ICSV.

Not really too bothered about the hassle fitting one. Done some research and it doesn't seem to be as much of a pain on the sti 5 as you mentioned Jon. Was just wondering if there was any performance benefits for the extra cash.

Looks like I'm on the prowl for an sti 8 i/c then.

The Sti8 gives you the ability to open up the engine to the other more significant mods, TD 20g/injectors etc and get the benefit of those while keeping weight and to an extent, lag, to a minimum.

Alone I doubt you would see a step-change increase in performance with just the Sti8 TMIC.
I changed mine just as much for the fun (?) of modding the car, but allowing the changes to be effective.

Just to note, at Well Lane the bhp readings on 5 successive runs over 15 mins were:

353/357/407/394/373 That was put down to heat soak in the TMIC having an effect (max boost 1.42 bar)
The stock Stiv3 TMIC would never have done that, but a FMIC would have done better (@ £1000 when finished)
The Sti8 cost £250 finished. (saving bought the 20g!)

I've been reading your project with interest and probable should have mentioned that yes, this will be followed by the usual mods e.g. injectors, turbo (20g natch) and maybe headers. Don't want to be seen to be copying you too much as its a type r with a full decat and apexi pfc.

When Andy was mapping it he mentioned that the i/c was pretty much out of its depth at my current spec and suggested an sti8 item to replace it. Searching the for sale section I noticed a few of the ones that were for sale were being replaced by hyperflows and wondered if I'd be wise to go the extra mile.

I copied everyone else!

If Andy say's STi8 just follow that.
The '8' has a relatively shallow matrix but is very wide and much deeper from front to back so the air has a lot of area to go over, but is not choked trying to get through too much depth.

The aftermarket TMIC's are easy to fit in comparisom but are restrained by existing brackets, clutch reserviors etc.

A good '8' will cost about £250 nowadays and a weekend to fit for the first time.

Yeah, been watching that thread too. Will have to stop looking and start doing soon. Thing is my i/c, injectors and turbo have all maxed out at the same time so upgrdaing 2 out of 3 wouldn't really help so need all 3. Hope the missus doesn't realise what these bits and pieces cost.

The total upgrade cost I think was £3000 for my car, but it is all or nothing realy.

Bloody fast car mind and great fun doing it (blood, sweat, tears comes to mind).

if you can afford it i would go with the hyperflow, a lot less hassle when fitted and still gets great results, rich wild makes 380ish on his td05 with a hyperflow TMIC

and theres 1 for sale for £350 somewhere on here :D

A bit late for me.

Went fmic to go with my 20g, ported headers and new injectors.

I am gobsmacked at how well the STi8 TMIC performs. After sitting in traffic and getting heatsoak the temps can rise 10C but after 350metres it'll drop back 10C! If I hadn't seen it for myself Then I wouldn't have believed it. the OE TMIC would never have got close to this performance.

As you've gone FMIC then none of this matters. Only the extra hassle of fitting a FMIC is your worry now (and potential lag). Good luck.

What splitter do you have? I've ordered an STI8 style hood scoop but I dont know what to do about the splitter. Would it be possible to fit an STI splitter as well. I mean does it work efficiently?

i did exactly the same as you, with an 8 I/C and bonnet scoop (milsport). i bought a 8 undertray as well, but it requires too much work to get it to fit properly.

using the classic undertray is pointless, cos of the small hole. if you cut this hole bigger you wont be able to fit any of the e-bay / scooby-si type splitters.

i ended up making my own. fair bit of work involved but more effective and looks better than chopping and welding.

the aftermarket scoop has a big air catcher in the back of it, that you are best to get rid off.

Mark your undertray looks very like mine.

Sonica, I don't use a splitter. The performance is good enough for road use without it. I'll let you know if one is needed for track use in Aug. See my project thread in projects.

not suprising floyd, lets just say i had a good look at your projects thread before i did it;)

i was determined to use the 8 undertray for the 'from the factory look' but it would need that mutch bashing and cutting it would look awful. a nice new flat sheet of ally is definetly the way to go.

i think the only real diffference between yours and mine is i used the seal off the 8 undertray, and you have used the foam.

I'm glad it helped someone. I have sourced some rubber sheeting (fetish shops have their uses) and I intend to create a seal like the OE design so expect an upadte on the project soon :D
