Grating Noise when Cornering
I have started hearing a grating/grinding noise when turning right round roundabouts. It sounds a bit like metal touching spinning metal.
Yesterday I tried going into a roundabout where it always does it in neutral and it was silent, but as soon as I put it in gear, it started. Does anybody have any idea what could be happening? It has never done it while driving in a straight line, only right turns! I've tried getting the noise to appear on left turns, but hasn't happened. A mate of mine said it could be the CV joint - could this be the problem? Are they expensive to replace? Cheers, Mark. |
Anyone???

wheel bearing or cv joint..

Funnily enough when I picked up my 98 wagon a couple of wks ago on the test drive it was grinding going round a roundabout.
Turned out to be the front offside backing plate for the front disk was rubbing against the rim of the disk itself. A "gentle" easing out with a screwdriver and was sorted. Only happened on the r'bout 'cos the weight shifted from offside to nearside :) Neil |
What RB says sounds most likely, hope that is the problem!

Thought this may be the problem too - the pads were fairly low, so I changed them this weekend, but hasn't got rid of the noise.
When testing it, I went round a large roundabout at about 30mph in 2nd gear and it turned into more of a whining noise. When I turned off and strightened up, it was still whining for about 5 seconds until it faded out. It also seems to change pitch if I change gear. Does this sound familiar to anybody? My dad reckons it's the front diff, but I'm hoping it's something a little less expensive! What sort of symptoms could I expect if it was the CV joint? I discounted wheel bearing as it didn't do it when I went into a roundabout in neutral, and changing gear shouldn't alter the noise. |
eek..

It wasn't the pads that were a problem for me m8. It was the backing plate for the disc.
If you've not pushed out the plate from the disc that might still be the problem - changing the pads wouldn't have made a difference (other than stopping better :) ) Unless I've misread your post....... |
Thanks RB5, will take the wheel off and have another look.
When I changed the pads I looked to see if there was any sign of rubbing but couldn't see anything. |
I've fixed it but I don't know how!!
Checked the backing plate for the discs but didn't see anything wrong. While it was on the ramp though, I noticed a small oil leak which i think was coming from the power steering. Topped the oil up a bit and tightened the belt a little. Now the noise has disappeared, so I'm not complaining - just curious about what it was in the first place. Thanks for your help anyway! |
FYI CV joint is more of a knock than a whine. Glad you've hopefully got it sorted :)

Sounds like it was the wine of low powersteering fluid..
such a nightmare trying to make out problems from text description :) |
