You've got to laugh...

One for all the sound smurfs.

We honestly thought this was a spoof web site for some time, until further research revealed that this is for real:

Enjoy.

Description/Theory: The Intelligent Chip corrects an obscure but important problem inherent in all commercial discs; this problem is one reason commercial discs frequently "don't sound quite right," sounding anemic, overly bright or tinny. The disc upgrade is permanent and the upgraded disc will sound better even when played on other machines.
That has got to be a wind up, surely?

ProperCharlie 25 February 2005 02:36 PM

Instructions: Remove the orange Intelligent Chip from its clear plastic protective case and place it on top of the CD/DVD/SACD player directly above the transport section, silver label facing up. Next, insert the disc to be upgraded in the player and push "Play" and allow the disc to play for 2 seconds. The Chip can also be placed on top of the player while the disc is playing with similar results. The upgrade takes less than 2 seconds and is permanent
these guys are defintely on something.

It is certainly up there along with the volume control knob that cost $485 because it was coated with special acoustic varnish:

That is for real as well :-)

hang on a minute - that's just a lump of wood.

hedgehog 25 February 2005 03:05 PM

Lump of wood??!! That lump of wood is covered with C37 Lacquer to give the best possible sonic performance.

You people are all Philistines, honestly, I don't know why I bother.

In saying that I saw something very similar in B&Q the other day for about a quid. I wonder if it would work just as well?

OllyK 25 February 2005 03:42 PM

Rack this one up with the various stickers for mobiles that; increase battery life, reduce radiation or improve reception.

AndyC_772 25 February 2005 03:46 PM

Well, at least the lump of wood could, in theory, actually do something. Acoustic vibrations could indeed couple into the volume knob (along with the rest of the amplifier) and gently shake it, and it's not impossible to believe that could affect the sound. Especially picky photographers use wooden tripods for much the same reason - the wood absorbs vibrations, rather than transmitting them or resonating.

As for the 'chip' though - what on earth have they been smoking?!

Who's that maniac who adds stickers to everything? Completely hatstand, claims something along the lines of 'your brain works in a different way when you see these, so the music sounds better'.

No, I'm not joking.

hedgehog 25 February 2005 04:20 PM

I think that sums it up, your brain behaves in a completely different way when it sees the price sticker on a $485 wooden knob.
