New Avo TMIC fitted....

Finally, my Avo Turbo TMIC arrived a couple of days ago from the land of Oz (cheers to JWRacing). Spent this morning fitting it to my MY 95 UK Saloon. I gotta say that this thing is a beast - weighing approx 3x that of the original. It is also much deeper and has a quality feel. It fits the standard position and the original undertray fits up perfectly ensuring a good seal.

Anyway, onto the pics:

I haven't had chance to put the car through a good thrashing yet to see what differences the new TMIC has made. To be honest though, anything will be better than the oem model.

I still have a few things left to do over the next few days. Replacing the header tank with a Forge stainless item is top of the list after a ham fisted ECU mapper ;) broke one of the hose fittings. I have been lent a header tank, by said mapper, from a later model scoob but it doesn't fit quite right. I'll send it back as soon as I get the Forge item (cheers Andy F :D).

I've also got to relocate the FSE fuel pressure regulator. The geezer I hired to fit it thought it'd be a good idea to attach it to the bulk head directly above the turbo. I have temporarily moved it to the front of the car using the header tank mounting point. When I get a decent length of fuel hose, I'll move it to the washer bottle side of the engine bay somewhere.

Not a cheap option at £550 + VAT but it is a straight swap for the oem item and everything that is needed is included. It also mounts right up against the original undertray so no messing about trying to get a good seal. My STi8 scoop provides plenty of cool air. I have yet to give it enough stick to decide whether or not it is worth the cash.

Bloody plastic header tanks, the top hose fitting fell off and I wasn't even anywhere near it ;) In fact I've still got the burns on my arm to prove it !
Lookin good Phil, any pics of the underside of the I/C ?

Andy

ps watch out for it overboosting if the intercooler is much better flowing, it may need a tweek to the initial wastegate duty (I can talk you through this on the phone if req'd)

theotherphil 01 January 2005 05:15 PM

LOL :)

No pics of the underside but it is exactly the same as the top. It still has a single entry to the i/c but it comes with a large metal pipe that connects to the turbo outlet via a 2-3" piece of silicone hose.

I've just got back from a 8 mile thrash through the local country lanes. I must admit, it does pull lots better through the mid range. It seems to peak at 1.3bar and settles down to a rock steady 1.2-1.25bar. The boost now holds solid with no hunting like we encountered during the mapping session. The biggest difference is that the car still feels as quick and responsive even after a sustained thrash whereas on the oem i/c, the responsiveness would tail off the more I kept going. After the run, I stopped in a layby and the new i/c was very cold so it must be handling the job well.

I am still getting a little det at high rpm (6-7K) in third (the CEL flashes, but only briefly). I remember you saying I had reached the max my MAF would read without rescaling (as well as running 90% injector duty); do you think this is the cause and should I be worried about it Andy?

I need to get me a commander before I start tweaking but if I do that, it'll only get me into trouble :norty:

I recon you are in deep trouble anyway, looks like the slippy slope to Modding Oblivion to me :D
Great looking TMIC!
Glad someone else has been out fixing their cars.....:norty:

If you are getting the CEL flashing at high rpm then avoid that area for now !
You may well need more fuel added at the top end to compensate for the increased air density/flow through the new intercooler.

I need a group buy to bring the cost of those IC`s down.

Very nice. Do you have a way of measuring inlet temps at all?

Tony.

willy 01 January 2005 09:06 PM

Andy F, o you know anyone who could fabricate ic relativly less than £550+vat?

I feel a group buy for someone.

I`ve tried Radtec but they never came back to me despite many calls/emails.

Not yet, but I am planning on getting something rigged up just out of interest.

Andy.F 02 January 2005 09:14 PM

My mate made this himself for approx £200 in parts if you know a decent alloy welder ?
It's exactly the full width of the scoop.

willy 02 January 2005 11:43 PM

Any idea whats best to try to get the parts from?

Willy

Andy... what make/manufacturer are those IC spray nozzles on the pre97 intercooler. ANd does he still need them ;)

Tony.

Andy.F 03 January 2005 01:08 AM

http://www.paceproducts.co.uk for I/C cores, pipes etc.

The nozzles are 90 degree fan coverage, fine mist type specifically designed for high performance turbos.....cough, or rather.............. delicate plants and available from your local garden centre :)

Thats my old slanty I/C originally from my RA, nozzles to be fitted to my new tmic at some point.

LOL.... cheers Andy :D .

looking at the original scoop undertray it looks like some of the air is directed towards the turbo. will fitting a bigger top mount effect this or does'nt it matter.
