nice one mate;)

cheers :D

Jay m A 14 December 2004 08:42 AM

Thanks for that :thumb: missed it on Sunday

velohead66 14 December 2004 09:56 AM

Nice One. I always have to wait 6-12 months before NZ TV get TG !!
Got any more ?????

Top Gear from 30mph was a bit artificial.
The key to driving any car fast is to use the 'correct' gear to milk the peak power/torque range. IMHO.

Silvafox 14 December 2004 10:18 AM

Cheers for that! I missed the show on sunday. Is it repeated at all this week?

Dracoro 14 December 2004 11:05 AM

Yup, last night :D

Nice one!
But for 47k! I'm sure there's far cheaper ways of getting to 400bhp. And oh so ugly!!

Tidgy 14 December 2004 12:55 PM

just wondering what would happen if a tuned up scoob did the same thing? bet 500-600bhp scooby would be able to beat it.

A bit artificial but not beyond the realms of possibility. If the huge turbo doesn't come on to full chat while 5000rpms, the chances of being caught off boost are pretty high. And when you've shelled out £47k for a japanese saloon you're not going to be hovering near the red line all the time.
I think its a great technical achievement to squeeze 400bhp from a 2 litre engine though, hats off to Mitsubishi. It makes the huge block V8 in the new Mustang with 300bhp (along with its live rear axle) seem positively archaic.

Jap2Scrap 14 December 2004 01:07 PM

:D

Some people.

I don't think it's an ugly car, far from it. Obviously anyone with half a brain cell and a small family would plump for the Lambo but for 'out-of-the-box' true performance (not just a BHP figure, after all 400 next to an RS6 isn't all that), without all the issues that come from tuning, that Evo is pretty impressive.

That said I'd have the Mustang. Looked like a car should look :D

CC 14 December 2004 01:23 PM

cool clip i missed it too.

i agree well done mitsu for producing a 4 door saloon that does 0-60 in 3.5 secs :D and 175mph. i think 47k is reasonable for such performance out of the box. do any production scoobs come close?

imo that's the best looking lancer i've seen, certainly not the best looking car but mean moody and purposedful.

reckon stig could have gone faster the track looked a bit damp and he messed up a few corners.

bart750 14 December 2004 01:38 PM

thanks for that m8

It'd do what all tuned scoobys do - blow it's No3. main bearing...

Peanuts 14 December 2004 04:27 PM

am I missing the point with the 500/600 scooby?

with power/weight wouldnt it take a fair few horses less than that to hold its own?

screechmr2 14 December 2004 06:14 PM

400bhp yet still requires no skill to drive :(

You often drive around at 30mph in top gear?

Simon.

Nope! In my MY99 UK, 30mph in top I am only pulling about 1100 rpm and not doing the engine much good by trying to accelerate. What a stupid test that was.

velohead66 16 December 2004 10:29 AM

A 80mph to 120mph in top gear and/or 4th would have been a bit more interesting, especially comparred to the lambo.

IMHO.

Adam M 16 December 2004 12:52 PM

mine makes 550 from a 2.5 litre, yet makes full boost (2.0bar) in any gear at under 3500rpm.

Am now switching to a 450/500bhp turbo which should give me serious boost at substantially less than 3000rpm.

probably a touch harder to drive mine!

I agree, I found it quite alarming that you could go round bends sideways and have one hand on the steering wheel. Looks like the computers are taking over the driving.

Also, looks like Subaru are going down the same path. my05 has the equivalent YAW control.

I don't think I'll be buying another scoob or evo in the future, I will have to source a mk1/mk2 escort so I can learn to drove and not the car do it for me. :D

RB5_245 16 December 2004 03:10 PM

Impressive, but you'd get a far cheeper and more useable 400 brake if you tuned it yourself.... just without the warenty.

did it give an rpm where the turbo got on boost? and what boost does it run?

Dave

Adam M 16 December 2004 03:30 PM

5k rpm I have heard elsewhere.
