Millsol from Millers Chemicals. Spray it on, agitate with a paint brush in stubborn areas and steam off. Your engine bay will come up like new. Do it at a car wash if you do not have your own steam cleaner but apply the Millsol only to dry components. I buy it in 25 litre drums but it will be available in smaller quantities. Far superior to the Gunk I used to use.

Out of interest is it safe to use on red top engines?

Yes. It is not a paint stripper. You can also add it to your fuel if you like but it costs more than petrol. I found this out by accident when I added 3 litres when I was experimenting with some home brew. As I was adding it I mistakenly concluded the manufacturer had added a green dye for excise reasons. Anyway, it out performed 2mls per litre NF and the knock link was as quiet as a mouse. Only discovered my silly mistake when I went to degrease something.

another vote for the CD2 stuff, spray the degreaser on and leave for 30 mins then hose off (not power hose) run engine until dry and use the detailer (i used about 1/4 of a can of the detailer) looks brand new

I`ve used CD2 and its ok..... a bit sticky.. smells good though.
Its better to get a couple of cans of brake cleaner/degreaser and work well into all the crevices.
WD40 all the electrical connections and cover anything really sensitive(ie alarm/intercooler etc), rinse off with water, not jetwash unless you know what you are doing.
Then taking your time, dry the engine with an old towel.
It might take a couple of goes.
Then use a good plastic product like Meguiars vinyl and rubber cleaner, or something similar..ie autoglym.
Spray it on all the plastic/rubber pipes and use another towel(cut up smaller) to work into the parts and remove the excess.
Thats what I do.
I`ll post some pics when I get time, but most of the SMACS who`ve seem under my bonnet always comment on how clean it is.(my95)
Little and often keeps it that way too.
Just thought I`d share my tips.

another for CD2 - good stuff... not used it on the scoob but on past motors..

Got CD2 today and it is very good :) My engine was manky and was not at all impressed when I picked up car from dealer. For the sake of £6.99 I would have thought they could have at least tried.
