saxo vts or 106 gti???
as above peeps. heard so much about the 106 being best handling car in it's class, but isn't that the same for the vts as it's basically the same car, with nicer interiorIMHO;)? the car is for myself as scoob ownership is going pearshaped at the mo, so as i can get either of the above around 4.5k....hopefully and as i've been on a traders policy from passing my test and a speeding conviction from 2001, these are about the nippiest motors for cheap money i can get about now. all opinions will help my mind ease, thanks.:)
oh and a yaris t-sport aint out the question;) |
C&CC tested them back-to-back but that was before the Saxo facelift which also gave it better wheels and tyres.
They found the 106 ultimately had a better back end and thought the Saxo could result in some nasty back-end movements if provoked. Thought was it was maybe ARBs or even beam mounting bushes that were the difference. After the facelift Saxo has the edge with its better wheels/tyres and modernified dash. If it's anything like my AX, get a Haynes manual and understand the wiring as French electrics seem less than resilient over time. J. |
id go with the VTS, but thats biased as i own one. 106gti is the same car just less common.
|
Go with the VTS. Had both and enjoyed the VTS so much more. They are virtually the same car but prefered the handling and gear ratios in the VTS. Also looks better inside and out in my opinion. They weigh virtually nothing and are a laugh if you like a bit of lift off oversteer shernanigans.

The cars are very close to call. Most people prefer the interior of the GTI but I personally think it looks even more dated than the VTS. Outside I'd say the MKII VTS looks far more muscly than the skinny looking GTI. In a straightline they are the same with only bawhairs suggesting the VTS might be quicker in some publications on paper - on the road they are even. Handling wise the GTI has a more stable back end but IMHO the VTS's rear is perfectly fine if you actually have a clue how to drive! To say its adjustable would be a massive understatement!!!! You can chuck her into a corner with what you feel MUST be 10mph too much but yet the front holds well and a little lift gives a nice switch in attitude and a slide if you want. It takes no more than to brush the throttle and she smoothly comes back around :) You switch between understeer and oversteer easily on the throttle near the grip limit and believe me that limit is bloody high!!
You have to make a personal decision on which of the two you want :) The GTI generally has a better image but is more expensive and looks more girly IMHO. The VTS has a horrible image (sadly!) but is a riot and is cheaper. |
The GTI looks far better IMHO, and doesn't have the image of the Paxo.........

Skinny & looks far too much like the 1.1 as the bodykit is too subtle. Also very gay ;):D http://bfgsport.free.fr/Nos_potes/Sa...Mouf%20(3).JPG Meaner, more chunky, more manly. Grrrrrr ;):D |
My Saxo looks like this..
saxo <<<<<link now working! Very chav, but makes me laugh when a scooby overtakes and the kids in the back gape open-mouthed at the saxo.. Their dad must be fuming :D Just to say I don't race anyone, and certainly know my place in the motor-food chain. I came from an MR2 and a GT4 to the Saxo so I'm well equipped to say they're good fun and lively but they ain't gonna set the world on fire :D |
106 - Posh as fook
Paxo - Common as mook :p |
Saxo- Manly? LOL, heard it called many things but never manly. Maybe very camply manly :D
Personally I'd go for the 106 as they're more exclusive and lack the max power image. |
I was looking at both but then decided to get a Punto GT, same money but overall i prefered the Punto. Its bigger inside (106 was tiny) get a low milage one and it will be fine reliabilty wise as ive had mine a year and nothing has gone wrong. Performance wise i cant really comment as i didnt test drive the other two. The one thing i would say about a saxo is that it will make u feel 17 again but is that a good thing??
Oh watch out for idiots who cant park and hit your rear quarter!! that happened yesterday :( Cheers Moz Low milage Punto GT was mint now has dent in rear quarter :( |
my missus has a Saxo VTS and its actualy a nice drive and quite nippy.
The only problem i can see is the pedals are to near together which does'nt make it easy to drive with anything over size 8 feet :) |
Agree with Dave on the pedals but you do get accustomed to it pretty quickly. My biggest niggle is the amount of rattles and squeaks that pop up and go away.
The link is working now in previous post so all pi55 takes welcome :D |
Saxo. Unless you're one of these weird people who like paying more for the same thing

There was also the fact it had lovely leather seats! :D |
Rich, eh, that is exactly what he just said ;):D
|
leather seats eh :) weight, weight, weight :p
|
This is my old 106 GTi >>>
http://members.lycos.co.uk/Pug106GTi...front_side.jpg Still reckon it's the best handling car I've had! |

Now your GTI looks  but its had some mods :)
|
106 for me, I think they look quite smart, and the image of the Saxo is nearly as bad as an old WRX ;) No offence Saxoboy :)

Did look great! :D |
That IMHO is the key to modifying cars though - you make subtle mods to improve the existing style and look of them rather than fixing massive plastic bits to them :)
No offense taken DBM as well you know I don't have a saxo or a wrx for that matter :) I wouldn't let image put me off though. If I had £6k and was looking for a fun hatch I'd by a £5k vts and keep £1k for upgrades and to hell with what people think. Whilst they mock from the sidelines I'd be having a hoot and that's what its all about :D |
;) Agreed. Mate at work has just got a green / cream leather 406. Nice :)

Well if he is ever looking for spare parts inside or out, or under the bonnet (out of what still works under there) then let me know :)

Me too :) Now if you'll excuse me I'm off to find a 3 foot carbon wing for the boot of the 406 ;):D

My neon washer jets will be fitted this weekend! :norty: |
:D
cheers lads....still no closer to working this out though, although i'm seeing that i will get the saxo mucho easier and cheaper. that's a good thing in the favour of the 106 for being exclusive, but not if i'm needing a car fairly cheap and quickly? unless i went for the quicksilver??? any more points or am i gonna have to go work it out by what the insurance is?:D |
Do work out the insurance, it's in group 14 IIRC :(
I had a VTS - fantastic car, reliable, fast, practical. FWIR the testers reckoned the 106 handled *slightly* better, but you're not likely to see that difference in the real world. I'd be driven by price and condition. Chances are with so many more Saxos that 106s you're more likely to find a good un |
