FAO anyone who has read Allen Carr's book - Urgent I feel like throwing my ...
..fags in the bin now but I'm not even half way through the book!! I just want to stand over the bin and snap them one by one!
Should I keep smoking and finish the book or do I chuck them and read the book anyway? I really don't want to continue smoking them as I have just been for a smoke and I didn't enjoy it at all, I feel ILL. I stink like an ashtray and have a disgusting taste in my mouth. I want to do it right. I am torn and desperately want to get to the end of the book so I can stop!! HELP!!! |
Keep reading....it DOES work - what did we tell you? :D
|
However, if you feel like throwing them in the bin now, why not do so.....
|
Yeah, but what do I do with the 17 fags I have left? Do I really have to keep smoking them? :(
I stink, off downstairs to buy a packet of polos! |
I don't want to bugger it up so maybe I should keep smoking them! :(
|
Not sure. Since I have never smoked, I didn't read a lot of the book....must read it all the way through sometime...
Does he say to keep smoking until you've finished the book????? |
Don't throw them away - Have one if you want one until you have finished the book. If you really don't want one then don't force yourself, but chances are that you will be dying for one in the morning until you have the full gameplan
|
Cheers fb :) I was about to phone their clinic! Having a bit of a mad one. I'm getting quite excited. I might pull a sickie tomorrow just so I can read the rest of the book! Damn work is getting in the way! :D
|
Drama drama!!

my missus read it about 8 times. it did help her, but she would always start having the "odd one" here and there. in the end she went to hypontherapist and never smoked again. i read the book out of curiosity. it basically incourages you to change the way you think about smoking; away from the idea that a smoke is a pleasurable treat.

Stopping smoking is down to changing your mind set, staying off cigarettes is down to will power and or a life style change.
Had a quick read of his intro, he makes some interesting points, but he is playing with you, to get you to draw the conclusions that he wants. If that works for you then that's fine. I suspect if you are open minded and accept what he says without too much thought then the book would be highly effective. If you start to question his logic, it may be less effective. His example: Stress and Bordem are opposites. Absolutely correct, he then infers that this is why smoking cannot help in both cases it does not make sense. I am not condoning smoking here, but there is no reason why the same activity cannot help you when you are in different emotional states. As a little example - what would you do (as a non smoker) if you were stressed?? Go to the gym maybe to work out the fustration, read a book or watch TV to take your mind of the stress situation? You may of course just sit there and do nothing. Now what about if you are bored?? You may go to the gym to work out and meet up with friends, you may entertain yourself by watching TV or reading a book, or indeed you may do nothing an remain bored. A given emotional state does not have only one activity that can change that emotional state, nor does the fact that something works to change one state mean it does not work for another. I haven't read up on the guy, but I suspect that he has some degree of pyschological background and has found a very clever way to stop people smoking, by clever use of explanation and dis-connected examples. Fair play to the guy, hope the quitting goes well eClaire, hope I haven't shattered the bubble!! |
Drama drama!! I recommend the book. It makes sense to me as a smoker and I really do actually want to stop now. It shows smoking for what it really is. :) |

Go for it, whatever it takes. As far as i can see, there is precisely ZERO upside to smoking.
|
Good luck with it! Hope it works :)

Perhaps the biggest reason so many people swear by it is because, by and large, smokers will tend to push to the back of their mind all the things this book brings up. |
There's nothing magic about it at all. All it does is tell you what any reasonably intelligent person already knows. If you do want it, you can get it from any large bookstore! :) |
You're only jealous I am finally doing it and you aren't! It might be a 'drama' but it is something I really want to do and need help with. I'll be fcuked if I am going to listen to your belittling comments time and time again telling me I can't do it when I can. I have no more time for people like you. Good luck ;) |

No matter how boring and repetative he may become :) There's nothing magic about it at all. All it does is tell you what any reasonably intelligent person already knows. Claire Keep the book handy for the foreseeable future as weak moments will occur Caution....You are flying high at the moment but you can still easily be caught out once the novelty of stopping has worn off Good luck :D |
Yay SiPie! :p
I will keep you posted!! :) |
I'd already stopped when I read the book - Him indoors decided we were stopping and that was it! Keep the fags til you are done, in fact I gave away the last few "security" packs months later! I've been clean since april 03! And when you do get the urge to have one do something else for 5 mins, the urge goes away. (my cafine intake increased!!! :-)
Good luck, and if I can do it, anyone can! |
i used his book and found it great, i now really dislike spending time with smokers as it is a vile habbit. whatever you do, follow his instructions.
chapter 24 or 25 "reasons to smoke" is my favourite. ;) |
PS The only gaping hole in the book is the chapter that should cover giving up smoking when you have a bad dope smoking habit
Different ball game entirely .... (allegedly ;) ) |
LOL :D
Seems like this is the right way to go then.. :) He does babble on a bit though. I am dying to get to the instructions! |
