XP Professional wont shut down on first attempt, have to give command twice - why?

When I go to shutdown my XP pc the first attempt of shutting down it doesn't do it. I then have to do shutdown a second time and it shutsdown. Is this due to a hung process or something else? Haven't really researched it to be honest, just wanted to see if anyone on here had experienced this before or knew the issue before I go looking into it.

It could be the APM settings, have you updated and patched windows lately (stupid question, I know).

Or your registry is just too big/needing serviced and is taking ages to save settings before shutting down.

Or running norton with CCAPP running, but not finishing.

I haven't changed anything lately though or installed anything. Its just gone from working fine to stopping from shutting down first time. The one thing I have noticed is it shuts down some of the icons in the task try by the clock and then stops. Can't work out what one its stopping on though.

Will have a look through event viewer and processes to see whats happening. Will run an update though to see if it needs anything and may re apply sp1.

Cheers.

Found this in event viewer:

"Windows cannot unload your classes registry file - it is still in use by other applications or services. The file will be unloaded when it is no longer in use."

Just gonna do a search on google for it and see how to fix it.

Damn didn't work, looks like svchost.exe is causing the problem but got no idea how to fix it if the above doesn't close it :o :confused:

There was a known problem (which was supposed to be fixed in XP SP1) where Windows would get "halfway down" and then fail to shutdown completely due to some sort of problem with LOGINOUT.EXE. I had this on my laptop but SP1 seemed to fix it.

Your best bet is probably to go and look through the page somewhere on the microsoft website about reasons why XP might fail to shutdown - but it might take a while to work out what's going on because there are so many things which could be causing the problem.

Cheers Paul but its definately the above problem, however the fix given for it hasn't worked.

Do a search on the MS knowledge base under the Resources/Support menu. XP has loads of issues shutting down like all previous versions of Windose :rolleyes:

I know of one registry fix that adjusts a timer on shutdown enabling XP extra time to complete the processes which apparently fixes some users shutdown problems. This might work for you. Here;

Also look at this page below, and then scroll to the 'Recommended Microsoft Knowledge Base articles' near the bottom.
