Hiya all,

can someone please explain the rear brakes on an Impreza sport...

the standard impreza has "leading and trailing type" rear brakes ( tech spec sheet ) these i understand. So what does the sport have, drums I know but what type of brakes and how do they differ from leading and trailing ?

Thanx in advance

While on the subject of brakes what does 4 Sensor 4 Channel ABS mean. I know what ABS is but what is the 4 Sensor 4 Channel part

I THINK it means that each wheel independantly detects for skidding. I think normal ABS is 3 channel, where the rears work together rather than separately.

I am probably wrong tho!

Drum brakes - I remember them old things...

Anyhow, a drum barke works by having a pair of internal brake shoes forced out onto the drum - hence friction hence slower speeds.

The shoes are are forced outwards by either one ot two pivots at the mounting points. If only one pivot operates then this is either a leading or trailing type - leading if the pivot is towards the front of the brake. If both pivots operate then this is a twin leading shoe - tricky to set up but best for braking power.

Crap explanation but take one apart and you'll see what I mean....

When you take it appart though, be prepared to have to walk about 35 miles for each tiny peice of metal that rockets out as you open it!!!

Ahhhh... them were the days :-)

And a big collection of screwdrivers, pliers and various levers to get all the parts back in again http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/wink.gif

Weened on a 69 mini with all round drums which suffered from terminal brake fade, as well as brain fade http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/wink.gif

Hello,

The days of the drum are not gone, they're just smaller. The rear brakes have a drum brake as a parking brake. And you still get to chase little springs across the room when you play with them http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/smile.gif My bottom-end scooby had drum brakes that I replaced with 10.3" discs with drum handbrakes. What a lot of work...
