Has anyone got a New Age Sti up on a ramp currently? I need the exact length of the propshaft - can someone measure for me?
Should be measured from the end of gearbox output shaft's metal shroud (covers the splines) all the way to the joint with the rear axle casing. Mucho Thanks, Richard |
no.. but I can tell you how much to chop off the GC8 oem if you want
|
LOL! OK, thanks :D ;)

Hi David, plleeeeaaassseeee :)
Richard |
Richard,
If you are using a r160 reardiff, the STI7 propshaft fits with the 6speed... Skassa |
Thanks Skassa - but I can't afford it, and don't fancy stealing one unless really necessary :) I have a spare classic prop to shorten, and a company lined up to do the work....just need to know the length!
Edited to add: what does r160 designate, and what about r180? I have an STi (I assume) 3.9 rear diff to go into mine as the box is the JDM one requiring the different drop gear; I'm assuming/hoping it's the same size as my current Euro spec diff? Otherwise I'll need some more bits! Cheers, Richard [Edited by dowser - 1/16/2004 9:35:57 AM] |
160mm diff 180mm diff
Ill try and find it tonight for you richard.. IIRC its 50 or 60mm David |
A 3.9 STi diff should be a R180 (bigger crownwheel)and it should have a plated LSD, if I am informed correctly.
Mark. |
Richard, The 160 is what we sent you. which is correct for your car etc. The 180 is supplied on Type R V4 upwards cars and is just physically bigger all over. Side drive shafts, hubs etc are also bigger together with 'Subaru' calipers.
Even the 22B still has the 'little' diff ?? David API |
Cheers Davids and Mark, perfect :)
David (API) - I'm also assuming the diff is plated? And further (just for my interest), are the driveshafts the same for both 180 and 160? |
john banks has a picture of both prop shafts.
we decided the sti7 shaft was about 60mm shorter, from the grearbox to centre mount part, with the same rear section. [Edited by T-uk - 1/16/2004 11:11:05 AM] |
Revised my post - I guess it doesn't matter too much if it's a little short? Is the prop supposed to slide all the way on until it buts up against the output shaft in OE fitment, or is a few mm's short OK?
Edited to completely change my post, sorry :) Richard [Edited by dowser - 1/16/2004 11:34:49 AM] |
LOL
edited to add "about" incase it was 3mm short and you hunted me down and killed me:) |
the booger edited:D
|
The prop acts as a seal on the output shaft, if it isnt all the way on i would suspect that gearbox oil would leak and muck can get into the box.
Rob |
theres a fair bit of room for error..
David |
T-UK - :D
Thanks Rob - this was also my original thought....hence T-UK's response to my post....which I then promptly edited, lol! OK - I need to get an bug-eye STi up on a ramp then. |
A bit of topic, sorry! But I want to understand the differences....
What parts are needed to swap a R160 diff with an R180. (on a MY99 car) Mark. |
Mark
180 conversion from 160: Rear diff, Drive shafts, and rear hubs complete with discs and calipers. David API |
60 the 6speed is about 60mm longer than 5 speed yes?
Paul |
I'll post the pictures soon.
|
Paul,
What a remarkably good and simple idea - thank you :) Richard |

http://www.johnbanks.dsl.pipex.com/655mm.jpg http://www.johnbanks.dsl.pipex.com/715mm.jpg Measured as shown - yes the tape does hump up over the middle, but tried our best. Multiple measurements had it to 60mm I would say +-1mm. |
Thanks.
|
David@API YHM!
Mark. |
Thanks Guys :)
Richard |
After you have cut it, do you have to balanced it again??
Mike |
Why cann't use the stock one??
Regards Mike |
Yes, it must be re-balanced :)
The stock STi7 prop will go straight on, but I'd have to buy it new (David @ API didn't have stock when I ordered)...it's cheaper for me to modify. Richard |
An auto shaft will also work. They are the same length as the 6 speed shaft.
