Its not the timing belt tensioner? I'm trying to think of the non terminal stuff here.
Is it the big ends? Sorry to have to ask. |
Subaru mechanic just told me that my timing belt tensioner needs replacing along with one "unbalanced" main pulley(??? due to bad tensioner may be? Personal opinion...).
I have some slight rattling / knocking engine noise from my 8 months old WRX03 the first few minutes on idle that dissapears when warm or high revs and believe me I am glad it isn't something more serious as piston slap etc but we'll see when the parts are here for sure... Jim,
In interested in the result, please post back here. thx simon PS my knock seems to come from the nearside rear of the engine (no pulleys there i think) |
Sheet!!
Expensive to repair? |
The belt tensioner can sound very "metallicky knock" from cold start, often virtually dissappearing when warm or high revs, so make sure not mistaken for crank knock.
The tensioner sits on the nearside of the timing cover, so you can always check to see if the noise does seem "louder" at this point. will help with simple location diagnosis. if the noise seems more "central" to the engine, well, sorry, it does sound more like crankshaft. Incidentally, crankshaft pullies only "normally £ fail if the centre rubber dampers has split, otherwise no problems encountered. |
...Incidentally, crankshaft pullies only "normally £ fail if the centre rubber dampers has split, otherwise no problems encountered I visited another Subaru service just for diagnosis and they told me that ALL crankshaft pulleys (visible external) have a slight movement as mine (they have rubber inside), what to believe now? And where are the rubber dambers inside pulley? JIM |
SCOOBYSLUT - Is this noise something like a "tic tic tic", high pitched, only on cold start? That's something I have from a long time ago, but no subaru dealer mentioned about it when I took the car for regular service...
This worries me, as I went through bad experiences with the timing belt with the ECOTEC Opel tigra engine... |
thought I had allready diagnosed this over the phone..
Sounded like rods / crank.. with no oil / holes then more likely to be the crank. David |
David_Wallis, yes mate is was the crank:( may need a new short engine:(
|
:(
|
Good excuse for a 2.5l ??:D
|
Peccy, sorry to hear that mate. If you dont mind me asking what state of tune was the car in, milage, what fuel used etc
Cheers, one paranoid subaru owner. |
Yep Peccy, be good to know, i'm in the same boat as Triple X.
Hope you get it sorted soon at minimal cost aswell mate. simb |
Triple X, bog standard car (apart from back box), always run on Optimax - well the 800 miles i did in it in this country before it went pop, And was being driven carefully as was booked in for a full service and cambelt change this week.
things are looking up though, place i got it from have been very understanding and reasonable about the matter and come to a satisfactory arrangement. |
