I've got a series mcrae and the insurance is like £700 more expensive than if it was a normal 4wd turbo even though it doesn't go any faster! due to this i am considering trading in my #130 and going to a 'normal' turbo if i cannot get the insurance down. I'm with privalege at the moment and they were easily the best, but the reason i bought the car is when i was doing online quotes a lot of companies (under the number plate) were putting the car as a normal turbo, so when i bought the car and phoned them.....oh pooh in my pants i had to find more money! has this happened to anyone else??

I've noticed this too, but the interesting thing is an RB5 was the same to insure as a normal UK Scooby. Which doesnt make sense as the RB5 is a lot faster then the std UK model, when I looked the Terzo was approx £300 notes more for me. The Mcrea was about 500 more. I swear insurance co make it up!

I suppose 17 inch wheels and grey paint are equivalent to 10 max power stickers.

The RB5 had the PPP as an "Option" which doesn't attract an extra premium as its fitted before 1st registration! So yes the RB5 (Prodrive) is faster than the standard car, not to mention the different suspension settings and read bulkhead to improve handling and therefore speed. I would only expect a greater premium on the RB5 due to it being limited edition and therefore holding a higher value than the standard car! As for the McRae I would expect the same!

insurance groups dont just go on performance. special/limited editions often are a higher insurance group. both the RB5 and the mcrae are ins group 18 where as the turbo 2000 is only a 17.

Adam M, dude in standard spec the RB5 has 240ish BHP, much more torque than a 2000 turbo and that’s before any extra Prodrive mods...a bit more than paint and bigger wheels!

RB5 had 218bhp in standard spec - exactly the same as 99MY.

With Prodive WR kit it has 245bhp - exactly same as 99MY fitted with WR sport kit.

The only real differences were over 99MY cars is the suspension and handling settings including a rear bulkhead to stiffen up the rear end!

I test drove 2 standard scooby's and the RB5 Prodrive before buying the RB5, it is a lot quicker I can assure you. I know a garage that have had 2 or 3 dyno at over 260BHP quite a lot more than the 24oish quoted in the literature.

I bought a UK300 with PPP. Came up on computer as same quote for standard WRX.As it was a rated the same, but to be fair didn't tell them about the PPP as it was fitted when new. STI was another £400.

As said above - Standard RB5 was 215bhp with 215lb ft torque (same as standard MY99) - but due to its limited edition status, grey paint, plaques, different alloys etc it was sold for £24,500ish. There was a WR Pack option which gave you the option of having the bigger spoiler, Speedline alloys, and a few other bits and bobs etc.. The main thing was the engine upgrade which was basically the same as the Prodrive Performance Pack available for the standard Turbo 2000 at the time. Power was upped to a quoted 237bhp and torque was up to around 245lb ft. The overall price was a whopping £27,500.

So basically, standard RB5 - Just the same as a standard Turbo 2000 in terms of performance. The WR version was quicker due to the extra power...

Strictly speaking the WR Pack should be referred to an insurer in the same way as a PPP for a standard Turbo 2000. It makes no difference that the 'Pack was fitted before or after 1st Registration - the car would still be classed as modified by an insurer.

The 'classic' special editions are generally grouped as an 18 because of their non-standard paint jobs, wheels etc.. The new WRX is a group 19 as standard and the UK300 was grouped the same by most insurers. Once again, PPP was an add-on and should have been referred in each case to an insurer. The current WRX STI UK is a group 20 and PPP extra too..
