I have just had third gear go bang again, this is the third time in under 15000 miles, has anyone else had this same problem with there gearbox?I am not sure what to do now,i cant aford a lateral performance syncro kit at the moment, any ideas?

Seems to be quite common, especially on UK boxes.
Sti boxes (exc. adj diff types) seem to be holding up well with some folks putting a fair amount of torque through them. A bit up in the air at the moment as there was a debate recently which unfortunately got a bit heated on 22B, but PAR gearkits aren't unbreakable it seems. To my knowledge, there's no definitive cure to guarantee unbreakability in any aftermarket gear kits. Alan  |
The first two boxes were wrx and the last one was a uk item, how much are the PAR kits and what torque will they take?
|
You need to speak to Mark about the PAR gearkits as he is the authorised dealer for them.
Same with torque capability from them, though i believe it's around 450Ib ft? Alan  |
When did the STi boxes start getting stronger? My understanding is that it's MY98 onwards.
|
I had a 97uk box in last and that lasted two months, are the 98 onwards stronger?

It's a reference to ver 5/6 Sti gearboxes which are in use by a few people with pretty powerful scoobs. Haven't came across much feedback from those that use boxes out of the earlier cars or those that ran variable diffs, so can't comment on them. I'm led to believe that 3rd gear in the later version Sti 5 speed boxes is slightly wider than the UK 3rd equivalent, but i don't have sufficient knowledge of these drivetrains to give hard facts, only what i have experienced, seen and been told by other more learned members and what other Subaru owners are experiencing. Alan  |
I have also heard of sti 5/6 running big power and torque but trying to find a second hand box and diff complete is hard and expensive.
|
About a month back i had the same problem, killed my gbox well actually 3rd gear? I got a replacement from this man.

The PAR kit is guaranteed against breakage up to 450 BHP and 400 lbft. However, the guarantee does not cover non-PAR parts which may have caused the failure and it does not cover what the manufacturer judges are failures due to incorrect gearbox build.
I've gone with one and intend to push it to its guaranteed limit and no further, which happens to also be I believe a sensible limit for an EJ257 with any expectation whatsoever of reliabity. I gather that 28 of the 30 or so kits supplied so far in Europe by Lateral have not failed and the two that have were replaced under warranty. Sounds like as good a track record as you'll get at this level to me. [Edited by john banks - 11/16/2003 10:44:11 PM] |
Has been suggested (now I know this may not apply to guys who are blowing boxes with big BHP) that the standard gear box oil level (think it's 3.5litres) is actually too low and 3rd gear ends up getting 'splashed' rather than 'bathed'...
Think it was T-UK some time ago who suggested putting an extra 0.5litres of gearbox oil in on top of maufacturers stated amount  |
Changing gear like an idiot/gorilla will also damage your gearbox, no matter how good it is.

why donīt you just change to the STI 6speed gearbox and then you can stop being worried about gearbox breakdown :D
Skassa |
If i go for the STI box there is still no guarantee it will not break so my only option is to spend the money and buy kit that will take the torque.
|
Where can you get an STi 6 speed? Price?
|
sti 6 speed hmmmmmm....... i want one of those as well. should they not be more availablish now that the sti 7 and 8 have been oad going for a while?
cheers big sinky |
I got my 6speed together with the STI7 propshaft and gearlinkade from API,It had done 1700miles and it was cheaper then a Par gearset is without install,
With the parts itīs a direct bolton,no mods Skassa |

Think it was T-UK some time ago who suggested putting an extra 0.5litres of gearbox oil in on top of maufacturers stated amount You mean when I swapped my oil when the box was off I over filled and it was a good thing? :on my god: lol :) Makes a change.. all my mistakes normally cost me money. JGM :) |
iirc
3.5litres take it to max on dip stick. manufacturer states 4litres so that is what I always put in now. |
I guarantee I will be one of the first to break the 6 speed box, but I think paul covered why..

Dont take this the wrong way but i am glad it is not just me breaking boxes,i was beginning to think i just had bad luck or could not drive properly(no jokes please). The scooby third gear is a real problem for a lot of people.
|
I stripped my 3rd gear on my box the other week (UK MY98). I don't 'thrash' the car that much and always thought I took care (as much as you can) of the box eg blipping the loud peddle to change down, trying to not snatching gears. The car is just running a full de-cat and dawes (1.05 bar). When it eventualy went, I was in first gear gently pulling out of my drive, with my nan in the car!!!
I got a 2nd hand box from GradeA. Its getting fitted today so I'll ask them to put 4 litres in. Thanx for the info:) |
David,
I look forward to hear about the breaking of the 6speed :D It seems that the one on the JUN car is going strong at 600hp Skassa |
Just when i thought it could not get any worst, mark at latral performance does not take credit cards,so i cant buy the kit,Bugger!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
|
What are the ratios of the 6spd box like? Would it go in my RA? Would be good to have the same ratios for the first fifth gear and to use 6th as a motorway gear!
