A guy at work is looking for a new car!

His cousin has a Nissan Pulsar GTI-R running about 280bhp and runs quarter mile at Santa Pod in 13 seconds dead.

Different turbo, 2.1 litre engine, FMIC, you get the idea!

Anyway he has about £6k to spend on a base car to try and show up his cousin!!! (More money can be spent on mods later!! ;))

The only stipulation is that the car will also be a daily runner and needs to be relible for his 40 miles a day to work! It will be his ONLY car!

Track cars are fine, but he really wants to 'Live his life 1/4 miles at a time'!!!

My idea is to get a late Nissan 200SX (14a) for about £6k!

All it would need is a FMIC, boost controller and some skillful clutch control for the RWD and it should be ok!!

Just a little something above the standard 197bhp! ;) Maybe fixed with nitrous kicking in at about 3,500rpm when on WOT.

Richard Askew 14 October 2003 02:49 PM

Stripped out Mk2 Escort with a Cosworth YB engine :)

Andy Tang 14 October 2003 02:51 PM

I like your thinking Rich!! :D

bobfrog1 14 October 2003 02:51 PM

my mate built a nova that does 12.4 second quarters, with mates helping him out he built it for 3K. Although it runs slicks its running a standard cam + head and no slip diff!

all he has to do is change the wheels for normal alloys (10 minute job) then he can drive it on the road

Goochie 14 October 2003 02:56 PM

But... its still a Nova!!

bobfrog1 14 October 2003 03:05 PM

Goochie, I personally don't like nova's either but If I was building a drag car for £6k (like the subject of this thread) I'd buy the cheapest, lightest shell I could get, imagine what a 3K 12.4 second nova would do with another 3K spend on it :)

I've seens lots of cars at the Street Racer Sunday league in the POD, with the exception of a few cars it would be very difficult to build a drag car that does at least low 12 second quarters for £6K

lightning101 14 October 2003 03:11 PM

Simple - Westfield kit car - build it yourself

and you can buy it in modules.

Single donor vehicle starts at £2250

lightning101 14 October 2003 03:12 PM

Reliability is then down to you !!! LOL

TVR Gary 14 October 2003 03:26 PM

Have to be a westy or Caterham I think......

TVR Gary 14 October 2003 03:27 PM

Either that Andy or a pug 205 GTi .haha....

Andy Tang 14 October 2003 03:34 PM

I've seen Nova's converted with 4wd and the Calibra turbo engine in it for about £5k!!! 200bhp through all four wheels in a box weighting less than me (probably!!!)

Gary, the 205 is a good car, but how much work would you need to realistically do, to get 1/4 miles to under 13 seconds!!! ;eek:

If it were me, the Nova would be my choice!! ;) :p

Andy Tang 14 October 2003 03:36 PM

Forgot the say that it's up to £6k on the base car!!!

Mods can come later!! ;) :D

That said, he seems very reluctant to say how much he wants to spend!

TVR Gary 14 October 2003 03:41 PM

Would have to be the westy or Caterham then as you have thrust my pug to one side like an old rag

Andy Tang 14 October 2003 03:45 PM

LOL @ Gary!! :)

As I said he wants a 1/4 mile car, if he wanted a cheap track car the 205 would probably be top of the list!! :)

Andy Tang 14 October 2003 03:46 PM

As it will be his only car, he's now worried that a Caterham or Westie would be too cold in the winter!!!

hawkeye 14 October 2003 03:48 PM

£6000 will buy you a nice sapphire cosworth with some money to spare for mods and they CAN be reliably tuned to big figures

P20SPD 14 October 2003 03:48 PM

Just with a impreza turbo engine and drivetrain;)

Andy Tang 14 October 2003 03:51 PM

Steven,

I think he wants a reliable car!!! ;)

TVR Gary 14 October 2003 03:55 PM

He dont want much for the money this guy does he?
£3K would get a cossie and another couple would give him the BHP to do it I should think.

Either that or buy himself a mini (old old shape) strip it out, add a honda Vtec engine, add nitrous and the 12 second is no probs. I know that for a fact coz I got done up like a kipper at bug jam by one. Not sure it even had the Vtec, but he was running NOS and said it was around 230BHP

P20SPD 14 October 2003 03:55 PM

Basic turbo engine;) in justy, would be fine:D

Judge 14 October 2003 04:38 PM

5 litre v8 Chevy Camaro stripped out with a supercharger and nitrous!!!!!................Thats what I'm planning anyway!!

JohnnyR6 14 October 2003 04:56 PM

A sierra cossie 4x4, theres one for sale on passion ford right now, 93K, fsh and a newly rebuilt engine with 500bhp (all good bits ahmed bayjoo etc.) for 6K.

CataIunya 14 October 2003 06:44 PM

What about them Daihatsu Charades....they can be modded to be quick quite easily and cheaply ?

harvey 14 October 2003 07:50 PM

Andy: Evo 1V. You can get it pretty light and there is plenty power to come from the engine which is easier to work on than a Scoob.

ALi-B 14 October 2003 07:50 PM

Dax Rush 4x4 + cossie running gear..about £14 +cossie (new)

Alternative, I'm working on the idea of a Jag XJS v12 (£500), stripped out and fitted with a manual 5 speed box or 4speed auto with a strip shift kit. Engine-wise..400bhp is a doddle just by some minor fettling. And 600bhp via dropping the compression and supercharging like here or a 7.2 conversion. But the weight is still a big problem :(

But using the theory that in standard 300bhp 3 speed auto trim it can do 0-60 of 6.5 ish (using just 1st gear!) and the 1/4 about 15secs. A manual box is said to knock off 1 second, add another 300bhp and 300lb/ft and loose some weight, you have something with alot of potential :D

So you could dump the v12 for a big-block Chevy, more tunable and 100lbs lighter :) But costs will start to get silly!

Andy S. 14 October 2003 10:21 PM

Simple MG Maestro Turbo £300

cant get cheaper then that

Andy Tang 14 October 2003 10:36 PM

All this was for a work colleauge, who hasn't even bothered to reply!!! ;)

If it were me, I would be considering the following:

1) Nissan 200SX (approx £7k for S14/S14a) - 197bhp

Stage 1 Mods: Full de-cat, filter, lift boost to 1bar, fit different intercooler (probably a Saab one) - 250bhp
Stage 2 Mods: Turbo, Full ECU - 280-300bhp
Stage 3 Mods: Improve fuelling (injectors, fuel pump, etc) and re-fine map - 300-320bhp

2) Vauxhall Nova with full Calibra turbo engine, running gear and gear box. (£6-10k) - Approx. 200bhp

Stage 1 Mods: Fit Nitrous with controller (to give additional 80-150bhp)

3) Cheap Subaru - £4k (240bhp)

Stage 1 Mods: Full De-cat, filter, boost controller (265bhp)
Stage 2 Mods: Front entry conversion on TD-05, improve fuelling system, FMIC (300bhp)
Stage 3 Mods: Full ECU, port headers (320bhp)
Stage 4 Mods: Larger turbo, ECU refinement, tuned headers (350-380bhp)

4) Integra Type-R - £6k

Stage 1 mods: Exhaust, filter, V-TEC controller - (200-210bhp)
Stage 2 mods: Nitrous ;) (250-280bhp)

hummelsubaru 15 October 2003 04:16 AM

I will definitely go Toyota Starlet. Samll car but big turbo?

Scoobyhummel

CraigH 15 October 2003 06:53 AM

Get an old E30 316 for £500, buy a 5 litre M5 lump for £5k and you're sorted

Or an early 200sx for £1k, then got 5k straightaway for mods

Renault 21 turbo 4x4 - think they're about 25p nowadays

Early 535 with a supercharger

540, can get these for 3k now  - then a supercharger. And NOS

2nd gen RX7...200as std

etc etc - loads of choice.

But an E30 316 badged car with an M5 lump.....mmmmmmmmmm ;)
